A PIONEER AMONG MODERNISTS, the Russian-French Marc Chagall worked in a variety of media, from painting to stained glass, and left his mark on multiple schools, bringing an unabashed love for color to the early Cubist scene in Paris and brushing shoulders with Picasso and Matisse during the golden age of modernism. Through it all, Chagall’s work retained the essentially Jewish and Russian nature of his home and heritage, blending fanciful composition with realist elements from his life and hometown of Vitebsk. This work in oil on canvas premieres February 2017 at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, courtesy of The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, as part of a six-month exhibition entitled Marc Chagall’s Cote d’Azur: The Artist’s Botanical Imagery and Inspiration Found on the French Riviera.
