Four candidates qualified to run for an upcoming special election in Sarasota-based District 72.

Democrats Margaret Good and Ruta Jouniari will compete in a Democratic primary on Dec. 5. Good qualified by petition while Jouniari elected to pay the qualification fee.

Republican James Buchanan won the Republican nomination after being the only candidate to qualify from his party, as Alexandra Coe failed to pay a qualifying fee or raise enough petitions to make the ballot. Buchanan qualified via petition

Libertarian Alison Foxall, qho qualified by petition, also advances directly to the general election.

The special election in District 72 will be held on Feb. 13, after the regular legislative session is already underway.

The winner of the election will serve the remainder of former state Rep. Alex Miller’s term. The Sarasota Republican resigned in August.
