This Anna Maria Island couple was in the process of merging their North Carolina home when they realized they needed help in deciding what to keep, what to part with and what new purchases to make for the new waterfront home. The couple hired Pecky owner and lead designer Patricia Estes and design assistant Sally Zanoni to create the transformation. The biggest change happened in the master bedroom, which, before Pecky arrived on the scene, was missing the welcoming and stylish feel the homeowners craved. “[Estes and Zanoni] came up with such wonderful ideas for turning the house into a home,” says the homeowner, who discovered Pecky’s downtown Sarasota interiors boutique and found the style she had been searching for. “My master bedroom was lacking the ambience I wanted, and now it is a perfect space for relaxing.”
The task at hand essentially was creating a bedroom that seemed luxurious and sophisticated yet airy and relaxed enough for the island setting of Anna Maria Island. “We knew it had to be timeless, soft, and most of all, soothing and not too formal,”says Estes. “We wanted the clients to curl up in a fabulously comfortable bed and feel enveloped in both a coolness, accomplished with the color palette and fabrics, and a warmth, accomplished with the textures and layering, the perfect combination for a restful retreat.” That enveloping warmth throughout the room largely is derived from the opulent yet natural Phillip Jeffries grasscloth wallpaper. “The grasscloth on the walls turned out beautifully,”says the homeowner, who ended up choosing to use a grasscloth paper in her home office as well. The “fabulously-comfortable”bed is dressed in Matouk sheeting as well as custom-painted linen pillows and old-world French fabrics with just the right amount of sheen. The bed is flanked by a pair of glamorously simple mirrored nightstands with drawers, offering storage, yet airy and perfect for reflecting the water view. Atop the nightstands is a pair of the renowned Christopher Spitzmiller ceramic lamps with 23K-gold, water-gilt bases. The lamps, hand-made in New York, are one of the anchor lines carried by Pecky, which hosted Spitzmiller last year for a store event.
The client says she especially enjoyed designing with Estes the custom upholstered headboard. The icy-blue, Belgian linen-covered chair by Verellen, Pecky’s focal upholstery line, “has extra depth, idyllic for reading and relaxing—it just calls your name,”says Estes.
And for those who are afraid that a TV may interrupt the atmosphere or be a design no-go in the bedroom, Estes says the TV wall ended up being one of her favorite elements in the finished project. “By hanging [the TV], and styling a few artistic yet distraction-free objects atop the elegant sideboard, it turned out great—clean and functional.”One of the best aspects of living on Anna Maria Island is the view. Homeowners may tend to avoid using numerous textures and patterns as not to distract from the view or because they believe it won’t be calming. However, Estes shows that isn’t necessarily true. The view is showcased like a large piece of art and the layering soft textures and patterns of like shades complement the view and create an overall soothing retreat.
