GIVING STORYTELLER

MURRAY DEVINE, 27, COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF SARASOTA, MANAGER OF COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING

Your nickname  I’m going to regret this… my coworkers call me “Murman,” but my last name gives people an arsenal of other options as well.  Your BrandEveryone you meet knows something you don’t. Would you rather be an invenstor or leader? Inventor, but innovation and invention are essential parts of leadership.  Biggest A-Ha Moment?  There’s a Woody Allen quote I love: “80% of success is just showing up.” It’s so true. I learned during my time in college that it’s vitally important to put yourself out in the world and get out of your comfort zone. I joined clubs, attended events, met new people, sought opportunities and wasn’t afraid to ask questions. It’s definitely gotten me to where I am now. When did you feel helpless?  Ooof. I’ve been fortunate to have lived a pretty serene life for the most part. My family immigrated to the USA from South Africa, and I became an angsty teenager after being uprooted and thrust into an unfamiliar culture. I didn’t quite recognize the opportunity back then, and I had no idea what I wanted to do when I “grew up.” I found that reading is incredibly helpful when the going gets tough. Sometime in my late teens I picked up The Tao of Wu, written by RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan. Seriously, it’s a great read. He writes about how the group overcame their adversity and the philosophy that they had to adopt to be successful. It really helped me during a difficult time. Music also helped, I learned to play guitar and piano. Playing music is my happy place; it’s great therapy. I still don’t know what I want to do when I “grow up,” but I’ve learned to enjoy the journey. Ha Sarasota Failed Millennials? I wouldn’t say Sarasota has necessarily failed millennials, because I don’t think it’s ever promised us anything. However, I do think we’re losing huge amount of opportunities by not recruiting and retaining young professionals, especially grads from our local colleges. We’re missing out on a lot of fresh ideas and innovation, which could make this place even more special. The affordable housing issue is a big one, but it seems like that’s something that’s hurting many communities around the country.  My Heart Goes Out To . . .  All of our nonprofits. IN Sarasota-Badenton, we  do too much talking and too little  listening. What's Next? At this point in my life, I can’t see myself working in any space other than philanthropy. It’s incredible to witness firsthand how the generosity of other people can make a positive difference in the lives of so many, and I love being able to document it all and tell those stories.

MACARON MAVEN

AUTUMN FULLER, 28, FOUNDER/OWNER OF A LA MODE MACARON

Your nickname None. Your brand if you don’t, someone will! Would you rather be an inventory or leader? Can you be a leader by being inventive? Leading by inventing a new concept, idea or item can inspire others.  Biggest A-Ha Moment  When I made my first batch of macarons they were delicious and how they should be. I was a home baker and started thinking maybe this is my niche.  When did you feel helpless? There have been a few times when it truly felt hopeless to run my business. I’ve had personal health issues and my oven broke the week of my presentation to the downtown farmers market, for example. It was overwhelming. Has Sarasota failed Millennials? I don’t feel Sarasota has failed millenials. But those who don’t come from wealth, like myself, don’t always have the easiest time in Sarasota starting a new business. If I had a vision and could just go for it without those monetary obstacles and enough cash flow from the start I know it may have been easier. Working so hard towards every little accomplishment has made them that much sweeter.   My Heart Goes Out To . . .  Gastroparesis Hope Foundation.  What's Next? I am in hopes of a small storefront someday. We will see!
