When considering Sarasota’s creative capital, local designers of the fashion sense are not to be overlooked. Here we take note of six of these artists, each with a different story to tell and a unique design sense to impart. From creating French-inspired clothing to children’s hats, European-born or from right here in Sarasota and career designers to talented hobbyists, they each share with us their individualized take on wearable art.

Multigenerational Families
page: 57

Today, the 1950s image of the “nuclear” American family feels like an anachronism. Two-parent households are not necessarily the norm, and grandparents are more crucial than ever to the mantel portrait. For some Sarasota and Manatee families, a multi-generational approach to child rearing is ingrained in their cultural tradition. Grandparents live in the same zip code and are as joyfully involved in their grandchildren’s worlds as their mothers and fathers. For others, unfortunate
circumstances impel grandparents to take full custody and become second parents to their grandchildren. The intention for these caregivers is the same: to give
children a well-rounded upbringing, even if the village it takes to raise them doesn’t have a Mayberry address.
