[TALK]  Chamber Unveils "Sarasota Tomorrow"

A new program dubbed “Sarasota Tomorrow,” is being unveiled at a Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce press conference today, where an advertising campaign featuring local personalities and celebrities will also be unrolled.

Chamber president Steve Queior said the campaign and program are intended to stimulate the local economy and encourage job creation.

“Our community has all the tools and assets to rise to the challenges we face,” Queior said. “But the competition is very stiff out there. The best way we can rise to the challenge is talking together more as a community.”

The campaign is costing between $60,000 and $70,000, but the costs would be much higher if not for donation of time and resources from area businesses, Queior said. A bulk of images and audio for the television, radio and print spots were produced last week during a two-day photo shoot managed by CAP and overseen by Orlando director Ben Van Hook. The campaign features notables such as Mayor Lou Ann Palmer, Police Chief Peter Abbott and sportscaster Dick Vitale at prominent Sarasota landmarks saying “I’m in.”

“I live in this community,” Vitale said. “It is important to me to do what I can to help out.”

Queior said the campaign is primarily intended for a local audience and seeks to rally the public around the need for business in tough economic times. The chamber is also launching the Web site www.sarasotatomorrow.org to gather information from residents and disperse information to the public.

[TALK]  LBK Club Announces Expansion

Plans for a $400-million enhancement of the Longboat Key Club and Resort were announced on Wednesday. Preliminary drawings were submitted to Longboat Key’s building department on Wednesday morning.

“We think this improves paradise on Longboat Key, and comes at a crucial time for everyone,” said Katherine Songster, public relations manager for the resort.

Resort owners want to build two nine-story golf club condominium buildings with 132 living units, an eight-story hotel with 196 rooms and 34 condominium homes, 10 luxury town homes, a 28,000-square-foot wellness center, a 17,000-square-foot meeting center and administration office and an 18-hole Rees Jones-designed golf course with a 14,000-square-foot clubhouse. The resort had announced more intensive plans in April which featured larger buildings and $100 million greater investment.

Company officials say the resort is expected to generate $16 million in surplus money over the next 30 years and add seven to 12 percent to neighboring home values above market appreciation.

Town officials said the project is the biggest development plan under consideration on the key in years. “We are a primarily built-out community from one end to the other," said Monica Daigle, director of planning, zoning and building.

The project is still in pre-application talks with staff. Once a formal application is submitted, it must go to the Planning and Zoning board for a recommendation before it goes to the Town Commission for final approval. Songster expects a planning hearing this year and a commission vote early next year.
