THINGS TO DO

[TODAY]  ART: Francisco Goya’s LOS CAPRICHOS, 10am-5:30pm

Los Caprichos deals with themes such as the Spanish Inquisition, the abuses of the church and the nobility, witchcraft, child rearing, avarice and the “frivolity” of young women. The importance of the edition featured in this exhibition, one of the original four acquired by Goya’s loyal patrons, the Duke and Duchess of Osuna, lies as much in the quality of its impressions as in its evidence of the generosity of a liberal noble couple, and their rapport with a radical artist (Goya). Exhibit closes January 6. The John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art, 5401 Bay Shore Rd., Sarasota, 941-359-5700.

[TODAY]  THEATER: Charles Dickens' A CHRISTMAS CAROL, 2pm and 7pm

Enjoy a new production of Charles Dickens' timeless classic A Christmas Carol, featuring new music by Kevin Rotty with traditional carols of the season. Follow the life-transforming journey of miser Ebenezer Scrooge as he goes from holiday humbug to saintly status. Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, 777 N. Tamiami Trl., Sarasota, 941-953-3368.

[TODAY]  EXHIBITION: 20/20: Petticoat Painters Vision, 54th Annual Exhibit, 9am-5pm

The Petticoat Painters, founded in 1953 by Martha Hartman, is one of the oldest working women’s art groups in the United States today. The group was originally formed to showcase the talents of female artists at a time when women had difficulty getting their work exhibited. Their first show was hosted at the Hartman Gallery in Sarasota. Art Center Manatee, 209 Ninth Street West, Bradenton, 941-746-2862.

[SOON]  December 21-22: THE NUTCRACKER, 7pm

The Nutcracker, the Sarasota Ballet’s perennial holiday production, returns to the Van Wezel with the Florida West Coast Symphony. In addition to the principals and corps de ballet dancers, this year’s production will feature nearly eighty young performers who were chosen from an open audition, allowing student dancers from all over the area an opportunity to dance with a professional company. Sarasota Ballet is encouraging everyone to “Take A Child to the Ballet” by offering a discount for families. Anyone who loves a child and wishes to introduce them to the wonders of ballet will receive 50% off tickets purchased for children under 12 years old. Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, 777 N. Tamiami Trl., Sarasota, 941-953-3368.

[SOON]  January 4: ATONEMENT, Call theater for showtimes

Award-winning director Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice) has reunited with his filmmaking team and his Academy Award-nominated actress, Keira Knightley, for another classic British romance, starring James McAvoy. In 1935, 13-year-old fledgling writer Briony Tallis and her family live a life of wealth and privilege in their enormous mansion. On the warmest day of the year, the country estate takes on an unsettling atmosphere, stoking young Briony’s vivid imagination. Robbie Turner (McAvoy), the educated son of the family’s housekeeper, carries a torch for Briony’s headstrong older sister Cecilia (Knightley). Cecilia, he hopes, has comparable feelings; all it will take is one spark for this relationship to combust. When it does, Briony, who has a crush on Robbie, is compelled to accuse Robbie of a crime he did not commit, with drastic consequences. Through a terrible and courageous act of imagination, Briony finds the path to her uncertain atonement, and to an understanding of the power of enduring love. Nominated for seven Golden Globes. Lakewood Ranch Cinemas, 10715 Rodeo Dr., Lakewood Ranch, 941-955-3456.
