"We're just beginning to play with new ways to bring technology into the community."

[Science]  Return of the Fab
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Editor’s Note: This is the first in a three-part series on the Suncoast Science Center, which hosts its first open house this weekend.

When the news broke that regional science center G. Wiz was shutting its doors for good, that also brought bad news for a sizable contingent of regulars at Faulhaber Fab Lab. In the two years since, area inventors, artists and other creative gear heads sat anxiously awaiting the return of a venue to do work. But the wait is almost over, and a reborn Faulhaber Fab Lab is hosting an open house this weekend on Beneva Road. “Now it is just getting the parties together again,” said Eric McGrath, the Suncoast Science Center staffer in charge of the lab.

Staff for the center has been hard at work this week in the organization’s new home; the Suncoast Science Center just last weekend got its certificate of occupancy on the new space, located next to The Florida House and near both Suncoast Polytechnical High and Suncoast Technical College. For the uninitiated, the Fab Lab, affiliated with MIT, is a digital fabrication facility for both kids and adults to inspire innovation, invention and mentoring primarily through the physical sciences of computer, electrical and mechanical engineering. In a short tour of the facility, Suncoast Science Center Chief Operating Officer Christine Lange points toward some familiar equipment, including a laser vinyl cutter and a lathe, then to new toys like a 3D printer capable of making figurines and models based on computer renderings. For the open house, Lange hopes to have a dozen locations set up with Fab Lab frequenters showing off the ware made possible with Fab Lab technology.

Executive Director Ping Faulhaber, who along with husband and president Fritz Faulhaber made the donations to bring the original and new Fab Labs to life, said the facility will make important connections between both the business community and a rising student body interested in science and engineering. McGrath said previous Fab Lab users so far have been the primary visitors to the new facility and the ones to reach out to help the upstart effort.

[Festival]  Riverwalk Regatta Set To Make Waves
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

City officials, sponsors and festival organizers and participants assembled at Pier 22 in Bradenton yesterday morning to celebrate the upcoming Bradenton Area Riverwalk Regatta, uniting Bradenton and Palmetto with a series of events on the Bradenton Riverwalk, through the water and across Green Bridge. Featuring plans for F-2 powerboat racing and jet-ski racing from HydroCross, fireworks from Zambelli International and a concert with headliner Jefferson Starship, the prevailing feeling was one of anticipation, and relief at the approaching finish line.

“Being a Manatee County resident, it makes me hometown proud,” said Michael Young of HydroCross, which will bring over 35 racers to the event, many local, along with several stunt riders. Performing similar aquatic acrobatics will be flyboarders, matched on land by the leaps and flips of the Xpogo extreme pogo stickers.

For the hungry, twelve restaurants will be providing refreshments, including Pier 22 and Anna Maria Oyster Bar, whose president, John Horne, assured the crowd the festival is “keeping it local.”

With a whole host of other events planned for both the engaged and spectator alike, including a BMX stunt show, a 5k fun run and a FunZone for kids, festival organizers hope to mobilize the entire area into one mass of revelry, and according to some they’ve already begun.

“I look around and I’m just shocked at the vision – where it started and where it ended up,” said Dave Gustafson, executive director of the Bradenton Downtown Development Authority. “The amount of energy that the community has put into this event just boggles the mind.”

The Bradenton Area Riverwalk Regatta hits shores Saturday, Feb. 7.

[Good Bite]  And The Beet Goes On
Kaye Warr

Have you been noticing a lot of beets on the menu lately? I remember despising beets as a child in South Africa, where my grandmother loved to serve pickled beets from a jar as a side dish and I would try, mostly unsuccessfully, to hide them rather than eat them. Talk about getting caught red-handed. These days I’ve developed a taste for the sweet, earthy vegetable. The fact that it’s a nutritional powerhouse doesn’t hurt – we all like kale more than we would if it had the nutritional value of iceberg, right? There are many restaurants in town embracing the beetroot but I certainly have my favorites. The Bibb Lettuce Salad at Station 400 features roasted beets, and if you add their incredibly tender and flavorful grilled chicken you have a real power lunch on your hands. Ionie makes an addictive juice with beet, apples, ginger and lime aptly named True Blood as the restorative powers of this juice include lowering your blood pressure. Sophie’s at Sak’s makes the prettiest beet dish in town, served with creamy burrata, tomato and arugula. Pair it with a glass of Prosecco and enjoy it on the terrace at sunset. You can’t “beet” that feeling.
