"The agenda needs an overhaul. Consent items are often minor but take up valuable time."

- Stan Zimmerman, Sarasota City Commission candidate

[Architecture]  CFAS Restoring Rupp-Farrell Structure
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Thanks to the pioneers of the Sarasota School of Architecture, the art of the built environment become part of the region’s DNA. Now one of the best examples of architecture from the school is being renovated and turned into an active testament to the modern movement.

The Center for Architecture, Sarasota is conducting a significant rehabilitation of a structure on Orange Avenue designed by Sarasota School pioneers William Rupp and Joseph Farrell. When it’s done, it will house both a gallery and office area for CFAS and educational facilities for the University of Florida CityLab program. A grand opening gala there has been scheduled for March 28 (5:30pm VIP reception, 6:30pm main event), and the entire facility can also be toured at an open house on March 29.

Guy Peterson, the Sarasota architect in charge of the restoration of the structure, said every effort has been put in place to preserve the exterior character of the structure. Originally designed as a furniture showroom on its south side with leased retail space on the north side, the building is most notable for the wide glass along the prominent wall spaces and for broad overhangs made from H-shaped concrete molds acting as beams. “It’s beautiful architecture, and one of the last remaining Sarasota School commercial projects still around,” Peterson said. “It’s the only one from Rupp and Farrell.”

Rupp, who ran legendary architect Paul Rudolph’s Sarasota offices in the peak of the Sarasota School’s prominence, died in 2002. But Farrell now lives in Hawaii and has consulted with Peterson on what elements of the building must be preserved and what changes would be appropriate. Farrell will give a lecture at the building on March 29, according to CFAS publicist Michelle Young.

Peterson wants to honor the original look of the structure, and is even looking at removing paint to expose the original black brick. One Farrell-approved change will be blue-sky paint on the underside of overhangs, a trick that discourages birds from nesting there because the nests feel exposed to the sky. Inside, a once huge showroom on the south side has been converted to hold a lecture hall and office space for CFAS and the American Institute of Architects. The north side has been opened up, with two former retail spots combined to create a study space for the StudioLab program. The building in total houses 7,256 square feet of space, with 2,509 dedicated for the UF program.

[Q&A]  Stan Zimmerman, Sarasota City Commission District 3

Editor's Note: This is the final installment in a six-part series. Each candidate for Sarasota City Commission was asked to answer identical questions on city issues in advance of the March 10 city election. Stan Zimmerman is running in District 3.

What would be the first priority at the start of your new term when you get elected? Print business cards.

What past or present Sarasota City Commissioner do you believe you would be most like in terms of how you govern? Fredd [Atkins], for tenacious constituent service; Terry [Turner] for ruthless fiscal management; and Kelly [Kirschner] for unremitting human compassion.

What do you believe should be the city’s next step in terms of handling the homeless issue in Sarasota? Housing for the homeless; social services for vagrants.

What is the greatest financial challenge for the city right now and what is the most prudent way to handle it? There is not enough revenue to balance the current budget. Either cut services or raise taxes.

What is one change you would like to see in the way city business is conducted today? The agenda needs an overhaul. Consent items are often minor but take up valuable time. “New Business” needs to be moved from the end of the agenda. We should either rearrange the agenda for efficiency, or add an additional meeting per month for routine items and commissioner comments. Plus we’ve held one informal meeting, and all commissioners found it useful. This should be encouraged to continue.

[Media]  Herald-Tribune Conducting Layoffs
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune was among a number of newspapers owned by Gatehouse Media conducting layoffs on Monday and Tuesday. Employees let go include some high-profile and long-time editorial staff members. The move comes three and a half months after the sale of the newspaper to New Media Investment Group, an arm of Gatehouse, as part of a $280-million acquisition of Halifax Media publications.

The Herald-Tribune has not confirmed the number of layoffs and said no statement has been released by the company before ending a phone call. Sources within the publication confirmed layoffs began Monday. Gerry Galipault, former entertainment editor , announced on Facebook he was among the layoffs—and that he already started work for another company, PauseandPlay.com. The media website NewsandTech.com also reported sources within the newspapers reported layoffs. The widely read media blog JimRomenesko.com listed long-time sportswriter John Brockmann among those let go in Sarasota.

[Good Bite]  Dining Alone? Eat at the Bar
Kaye Warr

It’s very important you cook for yourself as often as possible. Go to the Farmers’ Market on Saturday morning, get a bag of produce and make dinner a fun ritual. I also believe it’s important to treat yourself, to get away from the TV, to go out in to the world. Try new dishes, make new friends, sip craft cocktails. My three favorite places to sit at the bar and have a meal are Louies Modern (pictured), State Street and Selva Grill. Each bar has its own vibe, eclectic cast of characters and delicious draws. Louies Modern offers a smoky sweet cocktail called the Smoked Palm that features chipotle vodka and muddled strawberries which pairs perfectly with their Kung Pao Chicken Lollipops–gluten free and very tasty. State Street’s Bramble with muddled blackberries and gin hits a high note when enjoyed with the light and savory Chopped Butter Lettuce Salad. Selva Grill’s late night menu is affordable, stylishly presented and delicious. They make a mean Mojito to go with the Causa Fria–Octopus ceviche? Be still my heart.

[Synergy]  CareerEdge, SPC Launch TDL Tampa Bay

The partnership, TDL Tampa Bay, is funded through a grant CareerEdge received from Jobs for the Future.  CareerEdge has been awarded $220,000 to train 300 individuals over the next two years and provide them support and job placement services in the Tampa Bay, Sarasota and Manatee Region. The projects will connect underrepresented populations to the industry, with each site committing to serve at least 25 percent female participants. This is the first time SPC and CareerEdge, which is housed at State College of Florida in Manatee County, have partnered to provide workforce training.
