"RPS is really committed to the area and to the local community's economic growth as well as the education of the students in helping to develop a skilled workforce."

- Dr. Robert Sambursky, RPS Diagnostics

[Education]  RPS Exposing Students to Science
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

The diagnostic products being created at RPS Diagnostics help doctors around the world diagnose infectious and inflammatory diseases, but the work being done at research and development facilities here also offers young minds a glimpse at the genuine professional opportunities available in a scientific field. The Sarasota company was honored for its educational efforts Tuesday with the STEMsmart Business Champion Award for its work both exposing student groups to trailblazing research conducted in their own community and helping develop workers of tomorrow through local hiring and internship programs.

“We have a relatively specialized need in biotechnology,” said Dr. Robert Sambursky, president and CEO of RPS, “and having an influence on shaping the development of students has gone a long way in recruiting a skilled workforce.” RPS was founded in 2004 and today employs about 60 people; roughly 10 to 15 percent of the company workforce works in research and development. Sambursky said student groups come through the facility around twice a year; a group is scheduled for a visit next week. The company also has hired three interns recruited through a program with the State College of Florida.

RPS develops tests including the AdenoPlus, to diagnose Adenoviral pink eye, and InflammaDry, for diagnosis of dry eye disease, for use in the United States. The company also makes FebriDx, a test for an acute febrile respiratory infection, which is available now in Europe but still in clinical trials within the United States.

[Good Bite]  A Pub For All Seasons
Kaye Warr

In honor of St Patrick’s Day, I decided to seek out my favorite version of my favorite Irish dish: Corned Beef and Cabbage. After much research, debate and input from friends, I went with my friend Joshua’s recommendation to try Pub 32—Irish Gastropub. The description of this version was mouthwatering and suggested elevated flavors for a simple staple. “Guinness and brown sugar braised corned beef served with whiskey butter braised Florida-grown organic cabbage and Irish champ (mashed potatoes and scallions).”  I’m intrigued by the concept for this restaurant and pub. The website claims it to be a ‘beacon of authenticity’ and the space certainly feels like a traditional Irish pub, complete with high-backed, cozy booths named for Irish counties and Irish blessings adorning the walls. The food is the surprise here. For those of us used to traditional American Irish fare there’s much to be lauded – a focused and flavorful menu with organic, local, seasonal touches. The Corned Beef and Cabbage turns out to be tender, savory and sweet, whilst the other specials include line-caught local Mahi with fennel and roasted garlic butter, and for the vegetarian option, a stuffed Portobello mushroom served with Florida-grown organic rainbow chard. With live Irish music most nights and a friendly staff this gastropub in South Sarasota seems a good choice for any day of the year.

[Renovation]  Lido Restoration Near Completion

The Lido Beach restoration project is expected to wrap up this week, finishing early and on budget, according to City of Sarasota officials.  During the past two months, recycled sand was placed on 1.8 miles of shoreline, stretching from Lido Pool to Ted Sperling Park, stabilizing the shoreline and infrastructure. The project replenished sand lost during Tropical Storm Debby in 2012. Surveys are still being conducted to determine exactly how much sand was deposited onto Lido Beach, but it is expected to be approximately 197,000 cubic yards. Depending upon the final amount of sand recycled, projected costs are expected to be approximately $3.6 million with those dollars funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Tourist Development Tax.
