[Education]  Teachers With Advanced Degrees

The graph, released in the 2015 SCOPE Community Report Card, shows the percentage of elementary, middle and high school teachers in Sarasota County who hold master's, doctorate or specialist degrees; all are required to hold bachelor's degrees. While Sarasota continues to have a strong majority of teachers holding advanced degrees, there was a sharp dip in the 2011-2012 school year.

There are two ways to bring jobs into an area, you could lure employers or entrepreneurs can make the jobs themselves. A Build-A-Business program in Manatee aims to encourage more low-income people on the Gulf Coast to do the latter. Suncoast Community Capital, an organization focused on improving the lives of low-income families, provides services like job training, but also hopes to make many individuals realize they have the power to start their own businesses.

“The intention is to make sure everybody who goes through has a good idea of what they are getting into,” said Tim Dutton, CEO of Suncoast Community Capital. So the program offers exposure to business owners, intensive training with digital tools like QuickBooks and Microsoft Office and instruction on how to write a business plan. “If you do good planning, especially if you create a business plan, it increases the likelihood of success significantly,” Dutton said.

Suncoast has been exploring matters like crowd-funding and other ways to help raise capital for businesses. Two instructors, Art Mahoney and Carolyn Griffin, teach the classes, which involve training one evening a week. To date, the program has helped nearly 100 entrepreneurs develop a business plan, 45 businesses have started or expanded and some 30 jobs have been created. The next class begins Sept. 3. Classes are offered at Suncoast’s headquarters at 302 Manatee Ave. E., Bradenton.

[Education]  Cynthia Peterson, CFAS

When students start studyies at the University of Florida CityLab Sarasota Graduate School of Architecture, a major part of the vision for the Center for Architecture Sarasota will materialize. A special welcome event will be held Wednesday from 5:30-7:30pm at the Orange Avenue facility, where some $19,500 in scholarships will be awarded. SRQ Daily spoke with CFAS Chair Cynthia Peterson about the latest development.

How will these scholarships work?  The scholarships are awarded only to University of Florida CityLab graduate students who will study in our community and in our building. We have seven students coming in the fall, and each of the students will be getting cut a nice check. The minimum any of the students will be getting is $2,000.

Do you expect this amount of scholarship money to be awarded annually?  These will be standing scholarships every year. I don’t know if every student will get $2,000 every year, but we want to hand out $15,000 to $20,000 a year for the CityLab program, and we have been able to secure a commitment for every year.

Why is the education component so important for CFAS?  A big part of our mission is education, along with community awareness for our built environment. CityLab completes that mission with a studio-type program with graduate students coming to look at our community, with its issues and opportunities. We bring these issues into the lab and studio space and explore them. It’s an amazing opportunity for the community. This will fundamentally transform the way community issues are looked at and resolved.
