Former Sarasota County Commissioner Nora Patterson formally announced she will run for Florida State Senate for District 28, a seat currently held by State Sen. Nancy Detert, R-Venice. Patterson served on the Sarasota City Commission for 8 years and on the Sarasota County Commission for 16 years, retiring from local office in November. In announcing her candidacy, she stressed a fiscally conservative record at the county.
"It was important that Sarasota County government do what families all across our county were doing; tighten its fiscal belt and do more with less. So I was proud to lead the effort to cut our county-wide property tax rate while maintaining great services and a substantial emergency fund,” said Patterson.
Patterson enters a Republican primary already posting big names. Former state Rep. Doug Holder, R-Sarasota, has also filed for the race, and state Rep. Greg Steube, R-Bradenton, is expected to jump into the contest. All of the candidates are bracing to run next year, based on expectations Detert will resign her seat early to run for Sarasota County Commission. Otherwise, the seat is up in 2018.
