[Sports]  Biles' Coach Moving to EVO Athletics
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

What’s a gymnastics coach to do today after her star pupil wins a gold medal? Move to Sarasota, of course. Aimee Boorman, who earned international accolades coaching gold medal-winning gymnast Simone Biles, has been appointed as EVO Athletics’ executive director of women’s gymnastics and elite coordinator. The announcement came hours after a statement was released to People magazine confirming that Boorman was parting ways with Biles to pursue an opportunity in Florida.

"Coaching gymnastics is my passion and my life," Boorman says in a statement released by EVO. "Having just returned from RIO following an incredibly successful Olympics, I am excited to turn my focus to EVO Athletics and continue to live my passion. My vision for what a gymnastics facility should be is reflected in this at EVO. Not only having world-class equipment and staff, but the dedication to exceeding the needs of all members of the EVO family, athletes, their families coaches and staff while providing a platform for developing young athletes to reach their great potential." A press conference will be held at EVO Athletics today.

Boorman just recently traveled to the Olympic games in Rio with Biles, where the gymnast won the gold in women’s individual all-around, team all-around, vault and floor exercise, as well as a bronze for beam.

Kyle Lawton, CEO for EVO Athletics, says Boorman’s world-class coaching experience will be welcomed at the Sarasota gym. "My wife, Lydia and partner Jason Collins founded EVO Athletics with the intent to bring the best possible experience to both athletes and their families," he says. “We delivered the world-class facility and are beyond thrilled now to welcome Aimee. Her Olympic experience, passion and personality fit incredibly well with our culture and vision.”

[Politics]  Huge Numbers Vote Early in Primary
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Just from the ballots already cast for today’s primary, Sarasota election officials can tell voters will turn out in higher numbers than seen in years, thanks to high-profile contests for US Senate, state Senate and School Board.

In Sarasota County, a total of 9,774 votes were cast at early voting locations through Saturday, a substantial increase over the roughly 6,000 early voters from primary day in 2014 and 2012, according to Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent. Additionally, more than 34,600 absentee ballots had been mailed into the elections office as of noon on Monday, some 15,000 more mail-ins than the offices received two years ago. In total, that means more than 15 percent of eligible voters will have cast ballots before voting even begins today. “We’re going to have closer to 30 percent turnout overall,” Dent predicts. “I believe it is because of the US Senate race and a state Senate race where there are primaries on the Democratic and the Republican side,” Dent says. “And we have a School Board race that is very contested.” And those registered as Democrats or Republicans do make a large slice of the electorate so far. More than 21,800 Republicans and more than 17,500 registered Democrats cast votes early or absentee, as did at least 20 Libertarians and about 5,500 registered with other parties.

Numbers are more subdued in Manatee County, according to Manatee County Supervisor of Elections Mike Bennett. About 33,000 absentee ballots have been returned, an impressive number and more than half of those sent out to voters, he says. As far as early voting, only about 4,700 cast votes at open polling locations through Saturday, about the same as in past primaries. Bennett noted that early voters do tend to be more passionate about the local contests and more likely to fill out the entire ballot, not just the top-tier races. There hasn’t been the same mania in Manatee about any large races. “Talking to most people, none of the races have got them excited,” Bennett says. “The presidential race is what they are waiting for.”

Polls are open in both counties today from 7am to 7pm.

[Tuesday Tech Talk]  Playing it Loose with Advertising
Pedro Perez, pedro@nuevoadvertising.com

Sometimes the idea of advertising just because you have to forces most of us to buy advertisement we otherwise wouldn’t even consider, or worse, cut corners just to meet certain deadlines. Having a clear plan and a strategy for your marketing and advertising is a necessity. Understanding your client or market is a must. Everything from gender, age group, language preference, habits and practices are all quintessential components in correctly positioning your advertisement for success.

When creating a plan there are a few questions to ask—inquire about circulation numbers, distribution, pass along statistics, add versus content, views, etc. Think about meeting the staff and sales team. Are they knowledgeable about their product? Are they involved in the local community and outreach programs? All of these factors play a role in the success of your marketing and advertising efforts.

If you have a small budget inquire about add-ons. Sometimes advertisers will bundle products together or provide promotional discounts for multiple advertisements. So, imagine you’ve done your research and you are ready to sign up for a half page ad in your local publication—as a promotion, the advertiser is also throwing in a banner ad on their website for a week. Get your feet wet. Try it out. You can link your banner to a specific web page, landing page or promotion you are running while your print ad can display your primary URL. Review your web statistics prior, during and after your advertisement has run its course.

If planning your advertising is low on your list of priorities remember you can still accomplish a lot with a little. Keep an open mind, remain flexible and utilize social media to boost your efforts.
