"We are hoping to help ease the burden on families that are forced to pay the high prices until the generic versions of the medication are released."

- Samantha Hobbs, Vice President Canada Meds Services

[Medication]  Local Company Battles Rise in Epipen Cost
,

Canada Meds Services (CMS), a locally owned discount prescription sourcing company, now sells the children’s version of the widely used Epipen anaphylactic shock treatment injector, the Epipen Jr., for three-times cheaper than the manufacturer at only $180. CMS partners with international pharmacies offering a two-pack of the drug at a significant discount, which then gets mailed to the patient.

Epipen Jr. manufacturer Mylan has faced scrutiny in national media over the past nine years as a result of the rise in cost of their life-saving medication. With an average of $94 per two-pack in 2007, the price of the medication now jumps to the current average of $608. Thus, an uninsured individual in need of anaphylactic shock treatment faces a retail price ranging from $600 to $800, depending on the pharmacy. Mylan announced a $300 generic version that will hit the shelves in the coming months, but for those without insurance a more cost-effective solution is available through CMS.

In the United States alone, nearly 15 million people need an Epipen to help alleviate potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis attacks. With such a steep price increase on the standard two-pack of medication, a large number of people in need will no longer have access to the necessary medications for their children. “We are hoping to help ease the burden on families that are forced to pay the high prices until the generic versions of the medication are released,” says Samantha Hobbs, vice president of CMS. “Hopefully at that point, insurance companies will step in to assist with payment.”

CMS’ lower cost initiative provides many local families with the proper medication needed just months before the implantation of Mylan’s generic version of the Epipen Jr. and coincides with the commencement of the 2016–17 school year.

[Opening]  Fabletics Bounds into UTC

How to spot an athleisure goddess: a cool legging, with print or cutouts? Check. A multi-colored yoga mat under her arm? Check. A crop top, high-neck sports bra showing a sliver of toned tummy? Check. At Fabletics' soft opening VIP party last night, the house was full to the brim with just such workout warriors, taking cues from the ever-fit Kate Hudson, owner of the activewear brand.

Set to fully open on September 23, Tuesday's event gave the invite-only shoppers a sneak peek at what will line the racks and dress the muscled mannequins within the newest storefront at the University Town Center mall. What they found while sipping champagne and nibbling Morton's Market canapés: everything from slick capris to full-length yoga pants, loungewear, party dresses and even undies, alongside workout gear such as water bottles and baseball caps.

The brand's model revolves around a monthly membership—while you don't have to be a member to shop, insiders will get special savings and a curated selection each month according to a style profile. Order an outfit every month or skip it by a certain date at no charge. Members can now receive their online discounted price in the brick and mortar store at UTC.

[Good Bite]  South of the Border

Not quite breakfast, not quite lunch—the Huevos Gringos straddles the precarious line between an eggfull brekkie and a stuffed lunch burrito, and quite possibly could quench a dinner hankerin'. Station 400's deconstructed Mexican mouthful brings together the best of chilaquiles, breakfast burritos and huevos rancheros, creating a masterful mash up not soon forgotten. Two eggs any style (go poached or go home) roost atop sliced avocado and a bed of chopped and pulled chipotle chicken, the creamy orbs just begging for a light poke to set free the golden yolk. Refried black beans provide the base for the two crispy circular tortillas under the chicken, with green slivers of pickled jalapeno peppers and dollops of smoky spicy aioli surrounding the Latin-inspired mountain. Go forth and get messy.

[SRQ Story Project Partner Spotlight ]  24-Hour Sprint for Education is Back!

If you thrive on black coffee, instant gratification and being “wired in,” the Education Foundation of Sarasota County’s 24–Hour Giving Challenge is for you. This year’s EFSC Giving Challenge focus is its Technology and Innovation Initiative, specifically October’s #SRQHacks Hackathon (srqhacks.com): our first–ever! Thirteen- to eighteen–year-old Sarasota County students will team up with computer programmers, designers and problem solvers to use collaborative computer programming to solve a community issue.

Visit givingpartnerchallenge.org, search for “Education Foundation of Sarasota County” and give often and generously–but only between noon on September 20 and noon on September 21. Watch the leaderboard, sponsored by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, from the comfort of your own man cave or book nook and relish in the knowledge that not only will you fund the weekend–long Hackathon, but also the ongoing tech and innovative skills students will learn through classes, continued mentorships and internships throughout the year.

New to the Giving Challenge? Perfect! Your $100 donation magically grows to $300, thanks to a 2:1 match from the Patterson Foundation. For just $100 more, you could give an eight-week coding or digital design class to a student.

Old hat? Great! Your donation up to $100 doubles. Your additional $100 provides Raspberry Pi micro–computers to eight students post–Hackathon. Last year, we exceeded our goal with a 684 percent increase over 2014. Log on to support the #SRQHacks Hackathon and the technology and Innovation Initiative. Any dollar amount will be greatly appreciated.
