[Politics]  Where The Votes Are: Partisanship Soars
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

With a presidential race on the ballot and few nonpartisan elections to be decided, voters on the Gulf Coast acted in a more partisan fashion than seen in years, according to an SRQ Where The Votes Are analysis of results from the Nov. 8 general election. Republicans ultimately won most of the races, thanks to a turnout so high in Sarasota and Manatee counties that GOP voters would have outnumbered Democrats if every registered Democrat turned out at polls.

The partisan support ran deep even in races further down the ballot. In the two-county area, Democratic candidates for state House of Representatives won no precincts where registered Republicans outnumbered Democrats. A Democratic candidate like Newt Newton, the new state representative for District 70, still was able to win in a district where Democrats outnumber Republicans. But four other representatives for this region—freshmen Reps. Joe Gruters and Alex Miller, second-term Rep. Julio Gonzalez and unopposed Rep. Jim Boyd—caucus with Republicans in Tallahassee.

Incumbency could still turn the partisan tide, at least with constitutional offices. Democrat Barbara Ford-Coates easily won re-election as Sarasota County Tax Collector in a heavily Republican County; indeed she won more votes in the county than President-elect Donald Trump even as he won the county. And Clerk of Courts Karen Rushing, a Republican, coasted into another term in part by winning 9 of 15 majority Democrat precincts. But voters for open seats were more partisan. Mike Moran won a Sarasota County Commission seat handily, but only won three Democratic precincts in the county.

SRQ Senior Editor Jacob Ogles will lead a community analysis of the results today at an installmentof Where The Votes Are. The event will be held at SRQ Media’s headquarters at 331 S. Pineapple Ave. in Sarasota. Doors open at 7:45am.

[PINC]  The Science of Sexual Connection
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Is there a science to getting it on? Italian neuroscientist Giovanni Frazzetto has studied human intimacy at length, from marital bonds to online hook-ups. The writer of Joy, Guilt, Anger and Love will be among the featured speakers at this year’s PINC Conference in Sarasota on December 8. SRQ spoke with him in advance of his visit to the Gulf Coast.

Why do humans place a different sort of emotional attachment on sexual intimacy than we seem to otherwise see in nature? Frazzetto: It is common to separate body and mind, and sexual instinct from a feeling of attachment, but sex, even when casual, is not just one or the other. Experiments have shown that erotic desire not only involves the primal functioning of the limbic system (an evolutionarily ancient part of the brain that governs basic instincts and rewards), but also a certain degree of higher cognitive processing in the brain cortex. Our rationality adds a layer of complexity to the way we go about sex. Our sexual intimacy emerges from fears, needs and yearnings that are rooted in our biographies as well as cultural and societal customs.

What are the most immediate desires that drive people to seek personal intimacy? As a species, we are inclined to connect. If deprived of meaningful relationships, we will suffer from the ensuing solitude, especially if prolonged and our health, both physical and mental, will deteriorate. From the need to be touched to the need to communicate and express ourselves and how we feel, we aspire to belonging and to being understood.

How does the personal connection between individuals end up shaping society as a whole? Behavior is contagious. Attitudes propagate and we can adopt habits or features that we observe in others. Portrayals of relationships in art as well as media also contribute to shaping an image of what it means to connect today and to the legitimization of certain standards of behavior. For instance, today’s fear of commitment and inflation of partner choice in the dating scene contributes to a widespread avoidance of intimacy. If we individually practiced more compassion, forgiveness, openness and respect, we would see more of these virtues in society.

[Tuesday Tech Talk]  Spear Phishing Campaigns
Pedro Perez, pedro@nuevoadvertising.com

Spear phishing campaigns: You have received them in your inbox all the time. They say: “Open attached, invoice attached.” They are emails from people you do not know and sometimes from companies you do business with—be careful what you open. A few simple steps you can take to make sure you’re not a victim of malware of phishing are:

1. Make sure you have virus protection installed and up to date.

2. Don’t click on links you do not recognize.

3. Hover over the link and make sure the link matches the email description.

4. If you know the person, email them back from a new email requesting confirmation.

5. Delete the email ASAP.

These simple steps add an extra level of protection. Also, remember to update and back up your computer files every day.
