[Film]  Gulf Coast Movies Headline Sunscreen Fest
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Gulf Coast films will screen in many of the key spots of the Sunscreen Film Festival in St. Petersburg later this month. Sugar, a film series from actor-director Dylan McDermott, made in conjunction with a team of filmmakers at Ringling College of Art and Design, will be shown as a Spotlight selection at the festival, while Albion: The Enchanted Stallion, a film written and directed by Bradenton filmmaker Castille Landon, will serve as the festival’s Closing Night Film.

“I am excited to premiere my series Sugar at the Sunscreen Film Festival, and to return to Florida to premiere the series where I produced it with Ringling College and Semkhor Networks,” says McDermott, who will attend the festival with Sugar and with Opening Night film Blind, a Michael Mailer-directed drama starring Alec Baldwin, Demi Moore and McDermott.

Albion was a movie filmed partly in Bradenton as well as in Eastern Europe. Landon, a successful actress from the area who has also starred in independent films like Paradise, FL, and directed such talent as Burt Reynolds in And Then There Was Light in Palmetto. Albion was shot primarily in Bulgaria and stars such talent as Jennifer Morrison, Debra Messing and John Cleese. “The film is a fantasy film in the vein of The Wizard of Oz meets Game of Thrones, but for the entire family. It’s a story featuring a strong, young female lead and involves horses,” Landon told SRQ during filming.

In honor of the impending closure of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, the festival will also host a Retrospective Screening of Cecile B. DeMille’s The Greatest Show On Earth, which was filmed in Sarasota at the winter headquarters for the circus and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1953.

The Sunscreen Film Festival runs from April 27–30 in St. Petersburg.

[Good Bite]  Five-O Donut Co. Set to Open
Aviel Kanter, aviel.kanter@srqme.com

Sarasotans sure do love their doughnuts, from cake-style at La Dona to classics at Gold Star and the epic rounds at the Amish Baking Company. But Chef Christine Nordstrom of Sift Bakehouse has something extra special up her sleeve, and plans to unveil her new venture, Five-O Donut Co. in the next two to three weeks. Located next to a bail bondsman and mere steps away from the Sarasota Police Department, Nordstrom says the name and the logo (an old-timey policeman sporting a donut, billy club and a smile) are meant to be fun and tongue-in-cheek, and even checked with many of her law-enforcement friends to make sure it was kosher—all came back with a laugh. The focus will be on yeast doughnuts (think Krispy Kreme) and filled O's (think hand-made peanut butter cream), and five specialty styles will be on display: yeast, cake, cruller, brioche and croissant. Stay tuned for options such as the Mallomar and the Cereal Cruller, all rolled, proofed, fried and iced by a professional doughnut maker from Ohio tapped by Nordstom—doors should be open to civilians and law enforcers alike in a few weeks.

[Expansion]  Goodwill Manasota to Open Cortez Location

On April 13, Goodwill Manasota will open its Cortez location, its newest retail store in Manatee County. Located at 3465 Cortez Road West in Bradenton, the store will offer 17,300 square feet of retail space, 11,300 square feet of production space and a community room for nonprofits and community partners to use at no charge for meetings, programs and educational offerings. Goodwill’s location at 5512 Manatee Avenue W. is temporarily closed while the décor is updated and inventory is brought in—the facility will become an art and bookstore, with opening slated for June. Goodwill executives are confident the Cortez location will provide not just a better shopping experience—it has nearly 9,500 more square feet of retail space than the Manatee Avenue location and a more efficient space for production—but also a significantly greater economic impact. Last year, the Manatee Avenue location brought in $1.2 million; the Cortez store is expected to generate $3 million in revenue annually. The architect is David Bishop, vice president of Ugarte & Associates, Inc. Construction was handled by NDC Construction Company.
