[Music]  PMP/Suncoast To Rock The Gardens
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

The Perlman Music Program/Suncoast continues its Classic and Classical series next week, bringing a string quartet of PMP alumni to Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and The Ringling Museum for four concerts celebrating both classical music and classic Sarasota splendor. Each features the music of Mozart, Brahms and Ravel—performed by PMP alumni Caeli Smith (viola), Nico Olarte-Hayes (cello) and Doori Na and Siwoo Kim (violins)—but with two performances at Selby Gardens and two within the galleries of The Ringling, each also promises something a little different.

The music begins mid-week at Selby Gardens on May 17, with a special addition to the Gardens’ Chagall Nights exhibition. The doors open at 6:30pm, giving attendees ample time to explore the gardens, peruse the Chagalls in Payne Mansion and enjoy a signature cocktail and hors d’oeuvres from Michael’s on the Bay before the performance begins at 8pm. “It’s a whole evening experience,” says PMP/Suncoast Executive Director Elizabeth Power, with the intimate, 30-minute concert at the end the cherry on top. Tickets for this event are $50 for the general public and $40 for Selby Gardens members.

The following day sees the quartet heading to The Ringling for a pair of evening performances in Gallery 21. Surrounded by the museum’s collection of fine art and with seating limited to 100 attendees, the experience is nigh “magical,” says Power. “It’s like you’re immersed in this vibrational field.” Extending the set to a cool 45 minutes, the musicians will perform twice in the space—once at 5:30pm and again at 7pm. The shows will be identical. Tickets are $15 and include admission to The Ringling’s permanent and special exhibitions.

The final performance comes Sunday, May 21, with a full-blown 90-minute concert back at Selby Gardens. Beginning at 1pm, Mozart, Brahms and Ravel get the royal treatment from the PMP performers with the longest performance of their visit. Moving the performance inside this year, speakers will broadcast the music across the grounds, where guests can sit by the Bayfront and enjoy the natural and musical beauty as one. “And who doesn’t like being in the gardens, seeing the bay and listening to music?” asks Power.

And for those looking for something a little more active or kid-friendly before the concert, the day begins at Selby Gardens at 10am with the PMP/Suncoast Instrument Petting Zoo. With instruments such as violins, violas, cellos and percussion provided by Sarasota Violin Shop, music teachers and young musicians will be on hand to provide introduction and instruction to the curious and the bold.

[Ryan Flies]  From the Cockpit Part 19: Quicksilver GT-500
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

Editor’s Note: This is part 19 of an ongoing series documenting the flights of active-duty US Navy Pilot Ryan Rankin on his journey to fly 52 planes in 52 weeks through the year 2017.

When Rankin first saw the Quicksilver GT-500, he thought he might have a handle on it. Similar-looking to the Quik GT450 and the Breese 2 XD he flew earlier in the year, the assumption was that the GT-500 would fly similarly as well. “Not even close,” says Rankin. “It’s not even in the same ballpark. This is way more ‘airplane.’”

A little high-wing aircraft comprised primarily of fabric and aluminum struts on a fiberglass nose, the tricycle landing gear and Rotax propeller give the GT-500 an almost toy-like aesthetic, but it’s built to move. Flying out of St. Elmo Airport in Alabama with Herb Tipton of M-Squared Aircraft, they zip the optional doors onto the cockpit, sealing themselves inside and the cold out (and adding about 10mph to the top speed), and take to the skies, soon hitting a nimble 90mph top speed.

Equipped with a yoke for steering (instead of the hang-glider-esque bars of the GT450), Rankin is back in his comfort zone, but each plane offers its own particular peccadillos to learn and love. In this case, it was the elevator trim friction knob, which, putting it quickly, the pilot uses to lock in a new “default” position from which to steer amongst the counteracting forces of flight.

Put another way, the phenomenon of flight is achieved through the careful counterbalance of accumulated forces. As the wind rushes over the body of the plane and the propeller cranks, disparate forces push the plane in different directions, and these forces change depending on speed and angle. So instead of the pilot perpetually pushing forward on the yoke to counteract an exterior force, he or she can use the friction knob to lock in that counteracting force and any further steering will compound that locked position.

Tipton’s “not the chattiest,” says Rankin, but up in the air, there’s often no reason to speak—just take in the moment and don’t mess it up with babble. “Every time,” says Rankin, “I’m taken back to the reason I fly—that freedom and that experience. It doesn’t matter if you’re flying a P-51 Mustang or a Quicksilver GT-500, flying is flying.”

[Daily Shop]  Never Stop Fidgeting Again
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

While our hands have enabled us to conquer the world (shout-out to the thumb and the evolutionary beauty of the opposable grip), when stuck with nothing to do, they can often become a hindrance. They hang there like little meat puppets, looking for something to poke, something to touch, something to play with. Everyone’s been there—the office meeting gone too long, the dinner guest with the interminable story—and you just need something to take your hands and mind far from the soul-crushing tedium of life’s commercial break. Enter the Spinner Squad. Created by Top Trenz, this little fidgety widget has taken the market by storm in all age groups and over at Toy Lab on Main Street they can barely keep them in stock thanks to both high demand and sticky fingers. The height of simplicity, a metal frame and four bearings (the same type used in high performance race cars) provide endless spinning fun harkening back to the simple mechanical addictions of childhood, when tinker toys and hand-me-down tools still held sway. Easy to pocket, easy to use and hard to break, it’s perfect for the board room or the classroom (and marketed as an aide for multiple attention deficit disorders). Offered in a multitude of designs, from sports team mascots to the ever-popular Blue Flame, find the perfect fidget fashion for you.
