"Opening this office is a large step in Kellogg & Kimsey, Inc.'s commitment to growth."

[Construction]  Kellogg & Kimsey Expands Into Texas
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

A Sarasota construction firm announced the opening of a branch office in Dallas, Texas, as it continues its work for major corporations across the country. Kellogg & Kimsey officials suggest more expansion into other states could occur in the future.

“Opening this office is a large step in Kellogg & Kimsey, Inc.’s commitment to growth.” said Charles Kimsey, executive vice president. “Our company has earned an excellent reputation and longevity in the retail market with national retailers such as Wal-Mart, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy and JC Penney over many years. We hope to implement these same partnerships with our extensive hospitality portfolio with clients such as Hilton, Marriott, Starwood and IHG as a mid-size go-to construction firm throughout the state of Texas.”

The firm’s first work in Texas came in 1997 with construction of a Barnes & Noble in College Station. Since then, the company has also been part of projects in San Antonio and Houston, among other Texas markets.

Kellogg & Kimsey had been in operation for 31 years and has worked in 36 states, with projects in a number of states around the Lone Star state, including Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Utah, as well as California, all warranting an office in Texas. In that time, the company has been involved in such major projects as the Hotel Indigo in Sarasota and the conference center expansion for the Hyatt Regency downtown.

Kellogg & Kimsey officials say growth in the hospitality field led them to open a first out-of-state permanent location. The demand for hotel space is high in Florida, Texas and in Georgia, where the company has five ongoing projects and has noted Atlanta as a growth market for the firm.

Right now, the Dallas office will be manned by one individual, with the support staff remaining in Sarasota, and company executives say the corporate headquarters for Kellogg and Kimsey will remain in Sarasota, as it has for decades.

[Community]  Sarasota County to Hold Public Workshops on Unified Code

Sarasota County is creating a Unified Development Code (UDC) that updates and brings together the land development and zoning regulations, which control the development of all properties in the unincorporated area of Sarasota County. Combining these two codes aims to make it simpler to find regulatory information for any piece of property, while clarifying the regulations. Sarasota County has been working with a consulting firm to create the UDC since March of 2017. The consultant and county staff will hold a series of three public workshops from September through November to share draft language for the new code and collect input from the public. Each workshop will be at 6pm in the Main Hall at Nokomis Community Park, 234 Nippino Trail, Nokomis. Workshops will be held Sept. 20, Oct. 18 and Nov. 7. A UDC project web page has also been established for the purpose of keeping the community informed, and can be found at scgov.net (keywords: Unified Development Code). The proposed UDC will ultimately be subject to the full public hearing process and presented to various groups, advisory committees and the Sarasota County Commission for consideration.

[Hurricane Irma]  Operation Blue Roof Available in Sarasota, Manatee

Operation Blue Roof provides a temporary covering of blue plastic sheeting to help reduce further damage to property until permanent repairs can be made. The blue plastic sheeting is installed using strips of wood that are secured to the roof with nails or screws. This program is available at no cost to eligible primary homeowners in Broward, Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Palm Beach, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota counties. Other counties may be added at a later date. Only primary residences with standard shingled roofs are eligible to receive a temporary blue roof. Metal roofs and mobile homes may be repaired as practical on a case-by-case basis. Roofs with greater than 50 percent structural damage are not eligible for this program. For rental property, legal permission for a blue roof to be installed must be obtained from the property owner. Renters must also obtain legal permission from their landlord to continue occupying the residence until more permanent repairs are made. Homeowners must sign a Right of Entry (ROE) form to allow government employees and contractors onto their property to assess damage and install the temporary covering.  ROE collection centers will be set up by Corps teams in neighborhood locations in certain counties. The collection center in Sarasota County is located at 4430 South Lockwood Ridge Rd.
