[Gallery]  Ringling College Opens "Dog & Pony Show"
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

For 25 years, the New York Studio Residency Program from the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) has been nurturing young artists. In groups of 18 or so, they descend on the Brooklyn area for a semester-long sojourn from the everyday, living in special reserved studios, attending seminars with established artists and dedicating their time to their craft. Some even came from Ringling College of Art and Design. But after nearly a quarter of a century, the AICAD residency program has come to an end. Ringling College celebrates its legacy with a new exhibition, The Dog & Pony Show, opening tonight at 6pm in the Crossley Gallery with works from three Ringling students who attended the program last spring.

“Being there, you could tell there was something special about it,” says Hayley Denham, now a senior at Ringling College, of her time with the program last year. More than simply learning technique or having time to focus, she found herself encouraged as an artist, particularly to see that no two artists have exactly the same process—and that’s OK. “It was a breath of fresh air to realize that,” Denham says, and she would spend much of her time there creating a massive painting on fabric, ultimately filling more than 30 feet with creatures she simply calls “organisms.” Emily Rives, also a senior at Ringling College, attended the program as well, devoting her time to fabric sculptures designed to capture what she calls “events of the body” or “the negative space of a body”—those lingering environmental effects or resonant absences in the wake of human action. “It really provided a lot of opportunities that we wouldn’t necessarily get in our hometown or college,” says Rives, noting particularly the diversity of perspective and background cultivated by a program uniting budding artists from around the world. “It’s sad to see it go, but it had a good run.”

Currently installed in the Crossley Gallery, audiences at The Dog & Pony Show will get a chance to see these pieces and more, along with work from fellow Ringling student Jordan Holm, who attended the AICAD residency with Denham and Rives. The exhibition opens tonight with an reception at 6pm and runs through Sep. 29.

[Gallery]  Steven Strenk Debuts New Work with "In Transition"
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

Following up on the heels (and hooves) of The Dog & Pony Show, Ringling College of Art and Design debuts new work from local artist Steven Strenk with In Transition. Featuring 13 works from the Ringling instructor and SARTQ artist, the exhibition opens in the Selby Foundation Gallery Sep. 29 with an opening reception featuring the artist, and runs through Oct. 14.

With In Transition, Strenk turns his eye to familiar Florida subjects—boats and surfing—but with a marked absence of actual boating, surfing or people at all. “I didn’t want to paint the conventional,” he says. Instead, Strenk captures those moments of potential energy before and after, with surfboards stacked on trucks, boats on trailers and wetsuits hanging off the car door. The audience never knows which, allowing the imagination to fill in the gaps—is this the calm before the storm or a moment of clarity following its passing? Minus any human subject to contaminate the narrative, observers have only their artifacts to guide them.

“It becomes more about the color,” says Strenk. “It becomes more about the pattern that’s created and the textures that are created.” Working in acrylics, Strenk forgoes the painter’s brush in favor of what he calls squeegees, which function akin to a palette knife. He’s also pushing himself in terms of scale, creating pieces both mammoth and contained, and reveling in the freedom. “This is old school again,” he says. “It’s bringing me back to the nitty-gritty of painting.”

Opening Sep. 29 in the Selby Foundation Gallery at Ringling College, In Transition runs through Oct. 14.

[Good Bite]  Savory-Sweet Donuts Hit The Spot
Zachary Bright

While people boarded up homes and fled the city to escape the wrath of Hurricane Irma, the folks over at Louie’s & Kat’z Sweet Spot prepared for the grand opening. Weathering the storm and coming out smelling like fresh donuts, of the plethora of pastries served at the sweet treats shop, the maple bacon donut already stands out as a crowd-pleaser. Thick slabs of bacon top a rich maple glaze that envelopes fluffy fried dough, uniting the two for perfect texture and taste. And the decadent delights are made on the spot so the glaze stays warm and the bacon stays crisp. The contrast of the sugary and savory toppings provides a welcoming complementary taste for meat-lovers and sweet-tooths alike.
