Each year the volunteer auxiliary at Doctors Hospital of Sarasota awards scholarships to local high school students who want to pursue a career in healthcare. This year, 11 students from six area high schools were awarded more than $40,000 in scholarships. The auxiliary and scholarship fund were both established in 1967. Since its inception, the group has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to local students. The money is raised through sales at the hospital gift shop, fundraising and donations. Receiving scholarships this year are Caleb Walton of North Port High School, Cynthia Aguilera- Suncoast Polytechnical High School; Kayla Escobar and Gabriella Hernandez of Riverview High School; Ryan Measel and Delaney Smith of Pine View High School; Valeria Agudelo, Valeria Garcia and Perla Gimenez of Sarasota Military Academy; and Olivia Boczniewiez and Natalie Olendar of Venice High School.
