Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight has announced the results of a six-month-long undercover investigation, Operation Night Train, that yielded significant quantities of methamphetamine and thousands of dollars in cash. Detectives launched their investigation in October 2017 when they connected a 43-year-old man with obtaining and distributing large amounts of meth. Over the course of approximately six months, Special Investigation Section detectives worked to identify the man’s associates and others who may be involved within his network, resulting in a series of arrests. Combined, the five arrestees have 84 prior felony charges with 20 convictions and 67 prior misdemeanor charges with 22 convictions. Significant prior charges include Fleeing to Elude, Possession of Synthetic Narcotics with Intent to Sell, Obstruction, Aggravated Battery and more. During this operation, a total of 8.49 pounds (3,849 grams) of methamphetamine and 454.6 grams of cannabis were seized. According to Knight, this is one of the largest methamphetamine seizures to date. Operation Night Train was conducted with assistance from the Office of the Attorney General’s Office and members of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
