"Whitney made me want to sing, but Aretha taught me how."

- Naarai Jacobs, "Salute to the Queen"

[Theater]  WBTT Pays Tribute to the Queen of Soul
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

With Aretha Franklin’s passing on August 16, Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe knew that a tribute was in order. Franklin was, after all, the Queen of Soul—an icon that broke through musical and racial barriers to embed herself in the American culture. And with Salute to the Queen opening last night for a five-night limited production, the tribute arrived on time. Part musical revue, part biography, it had all the hits ("Respect," "A Natural Woman," "Think") and all the history, but who would play Franklin? Who could?

As a young singer, Naarai Jacobs’ vocal coach lived just down the hall—her father, Nate Jacobs. A performer himself, as well as founder and artistic director of Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, it seemed a wonderful, and convenient, fit. Naarai excelled. But one day, she remembers her father sitting her down for what would be a pivotal moment. “There’s only so much that I’m going to be able to teach you,” he said, “because I’m a man.” There remained a whole world of women’s vocal technique and presence for her to explore, he explained. “And you should start with Aretha Franklin.”

Naarai immersed herself in Franklin’s discography, watching old YouTube clips with Nate by her side, analyzing Franklin’s performance like a coach and the star quarterback watching game footage. He bought a box set of Aretha Franklin CDs; she uploaded them all onto her iPod for continued study. “Because I wanted to grow as a singer,” says Naarai today, “I made it a point to listen to her every single day after school.” The experience changed her life. “I call her the Vocal Bible,” she says. “Whitney made me want to sing, but Aretha taught me how.”

The lessons went beyond the music. “Just being a black person in America, you’re aware of the reverence we have for her,” says Naarai, but it was continued study of the music that revealed deeper reasons for that. Franklin’s freedom at the mic, to vamp and riff as the feeling took her, to wear her musical roots on her sleeve and in the recording studio was something wholly new to many listeners of the time. “That was too black, that was too church for pop music,” says Naarai. “And then you had someone like Ray Charles or Aretha Franklin come out and say, ‘I’m going to be whoever the hell I am, and you’re just going to accept it.’”

Still, with Franklin up on that “well-deserved” pedestal, Naarai has learned not to be nervous. She could never replace Franklin, and so won’t try to recreate her on stage. Rather, she looks to recapture the feeling that Franklin put into her performance, to harness that, work with it and pass it along to the audience. “I just have to be me, in the music,” she says. “I can’t wait to see people remembering this music.”

Salute to the Queen runs through September 15. Both Naarai Jacobs and Teresa Stanley—WBTT founding member turned Broadway star—will perform as Franklin, and narration will be provided by Nate Jacobs.

[Events]  Charcuterie Fights Cancer
Brittany Mattie, brittany.mattie@srqme.com

In light of September's place as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, come join the community at Louies Modern and dabble in some smoked meats and foreign cheeses, while raising funds for a pediatric cancer cure. “Boards for Bravery” A Charity Charcuterie Event will be hosted by The Benjamin Gilkey Fund—a local organization creating groundbreaking strides towards children’s cancer research. Proceeds from the sales benefit research within Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital and Blood Disorders Institute, and will inherently improve, prolong and preserve the lives of unbelievably heroic and brave kids like Benji.

This event is entirely new and unique to the area—and is more than sipping fine wine and feasting on delightful appetizers from Louies’ chefs (although that already sounds pretty great). Attendees will also have the chance to create their own smorgasbord board of luxury snacking—with a fanciful spread to choose from of specially-sourced meats, cheeses, veggies and delicious accoutrements provided by local artisans. There will also be local experts on-hand for pairing education to guide you on how to build the perfect charcuterie combo designed for your personal palette. You’ll even get to take home your handcrafted wooden board from JL Productions when you’re done, so eat up.

“I'm really looking forward to this event - such a great cause - and who doesn't like cheese??!” says Bev Murray, a confirmed attendee.

Boards for Bravery, Sunday September 23, 4:30pm-7:00pm at Louies Modern, 1289 North Palm Ave., Sarasota.

[Community Foundation]  Teens Helping Teens
Brittany Mattie, brittany.mattie@srqme.com

Scripted TV shows like Law & Order and Bull define the inside of a courtroom in the same light—tense, fraught and unnerving with harsh punishments and unforgiving practices. But for Teen Court of Sarasota, Inc., they want anything but for the children that end up on the stand. The youth problem-solving court provides students 8-18 who have been charged for minor offenses or misdemeanors, the opportunity to stay out of the criminal justice system, while still holding them accountable for their delinquent acts. In lieu of school suspension or expulsion and blanketed punishments often given by the alternative Juvenile Court, Teen Court offers instead, educational activities and development services designed to meet the specific needs of at-risk youths.

Teen Court of Sarasota was the first of its kind in the state and one of three youth courts (out of 57 total in Florida now) to operate as a nonprofit, which is where Community Foundation of Sarasota County steps in—to serve the school referral process and aid Sarasota County school administrators, guidance counselors, behavior specialists and principles the ability to send referrals for fair trial. And fair trial in this case means teens helping teens. The court is actually staffed by past offenders and youth volunteers who serve the roles of jury, lawyers, bailiffs, clerks and judges—operating very much like a traditional court—holding hearings and deliberating to determine an appropriate disposition. The defendant’s sentence is determined by their same-aged peers and usually includes community service, written essays, educational workshops, anger-management classes, mental health components for risky behavior or substance abuse programs in cases of alcohol or drug charges. And many do end up coming back to the courtroom on the other side as prosecuting or defending attorneys, jurors, etc.—admitting Teen Court “saved” them.

And with a 95% success rate—with only 4-6% of teens continuing to get into trouble—it’s plain to see how productive its restorative strategy is. “Instead of kicking them out of school, our mission is to keep them in school, give them a second chance for a brighter future and an opportunity to right a wrong,” Executive Director Heather Todd highlights. “We’re planting the seed for civic engagement.” The positive reinforcement actually proves to boost self-esteem and instill a passion for volunteerism by opening their eyes to the benefits of giving back and becoming active participants in finding solutions for problems that impact our community. Offenders can choose from beach cleanups facilitated by Mote Marine Laboratory, helping out at animal shelters, sports game concession stands, local theaters and moresubsequently introducing them to positive adult role models/mentors while exploring possible career choices.

“What’s special about Teen Court is the fact that we hear the defendants out, empower them to speak up and give them a voice in front of their parents, empathetic peers and educators,” says Todd. “We have kids from the richest families and kids from the poorest families. We serve everyone and welcome anyone that walk through those doors.” Because we’ve all made mistakes in our past haven’t we? Especially kids just trying to get through high school—often misguided or put in tough situations—the question of right from wrong becomes a blurred line. “They’re good kids who have just made poor decisions. And in Teen Court they can be heard,” Todd says. “A lot of times these young people feel misunderstood or unheard, but in this setting, their voices matter—it’s a beautiful process.”

Teen Court of Sarasota, Inc. has opportunities for and welcomes both youth and adult volunteers. If you're interested in their program, the best thing to do is observe the process for yourself. Check the calendar for Teen Court session dates which take place every other week, on Mondays in Venice and Wednesdays in Sarasota.

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County is proud to partner with SRQ Media Group to highlight stories about community impact powered by philanthropy in our region, thanks to the support of donors and our local nonprofit partners.
