Exploring All (100) Corners of Art Center Sarasota

Four exhibits await the curious and adventurous at Art Center Sarasota, as all four of the institution’s galleries fill for this first show of the season. Opening this past week, the initial salvo of the season includes sculpture, sketching, prints and an all-media juried exhibition. Curated by local artists Dustin Juengel and Nathan Skiles, the shows run through November 16.

In Gallery 1, audiences will discover Atlantis, a multimedia exhibition from Miami-based artist Brookhart Jonquil. An installation artist working in glass sculpture, Jonquil sculpts as much with the light his work collects and refracts as he does the glass itself. Often incorporating steel, mirrors and cement in his work, the architectural implications come freely.

In the next room, Gallery 2, viewers may see a familiar name—Natalie Lerner. Daughter of the late celebrated artist, Leslie Lerner, Ringling College instructor and Sarasota favorite, the younger Lerner enjoys her debut exhibition at Art Center Sarasota with 100 Corners, a collection of small-scale graphite on paper drawings.

Inspiration comes in strange places, and Lerner found hers in both Stephen King and a growing collection of smudgy fingerprints in her office building. “I would watch a bunch of dirty fingerprints surrounding a seam of a door,” she says, “and it was growing and changing each day.” Throw in a bit of horror with King’s The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill, about a cosmic moss that spreads slow and unrelenting over the world, and Lerner found ground ripe for experimentation—a simple composition, or maybe even character, that she could rearrange 100 times. Or more.

“This weird idea popped into my head and I felt like if I drew it more and more, then maube I could understand it,” she says, “or imagine how it would move or change or get a life of its own.” And with an opening reception this Thursday, October 18, that life enters a new chapter of observation.

In Gallery 3, find the work of An Onghena, a Belgian graphic designer and visual artist whose latest show, Remodeling Graphic Habitats, creates a site-specific mural in the gallery from Onghena’s multitudinous daily prints. Curated and installed by Kurt Van Belleghem, more than 400 mimeograph and Risograph prints unite image and text in a semi-autobiographical serial.

Last but not least, New Modern in Gallery 4 sees Caui Lofgren, chair of the fine arts department at IMG Academy, serving as juror for an all-media open juried show.

All four shows run through November 16. An opening reception for 100 Corners and Remodeling Graphic Habitats will be held Thursday, October 18 at 5pm at Art Center Sarasota.
