[Education]  Manatee County Announces Little, Lindsey, Losada Principals

The appointment of principals for two new schools scheduled to open in August 2019 were announced by Superintendent Cynthia Saunders of the School District of Manatee County. Craig Little, principal at Lakewood Ranch High School since 2014, will be the first principal at what is currently known as North River High School. Angela Lindsey, principal at Johnson Middle School of International Studies since 2015, will be the first principal at Dr. Mona Jain Middle School. Anthony Losada, the district’s Director of Secondary Curriculum and Professional Learning since 2016, will succeed Lindsey as principal at Johnson Middle. The changes will become effective on Monday, January 7, 2019.

[Business]  Goodwill Manasota Receives Grant from BankUnited

Goodwill Manasota recently received a grant of $5,000 from BankUnited for the Homebuyer's Club program. These funds will support Goodwill's efforts to assist employees who wish to purchase a home. Goodwill’s Homebuyer's Club prepares Goodwill employees for homeownership through a long-term program offering education, workshops and credit counseling. It also provides budgeting counseling for families to ensure successful homeownership and helps employees who achieve mortgage pre-approval to purchase new or renovated homes offered through standard real estate channels.

[Business]  Nextiny Hosting Free Chatbot/Live Chat Workshop

On Thursday, November 29, Nextiny, a Sarasota-based marketing and sales agency, is offering a free workshop to help businesses and organizations get started with live chat and chatbots. Joining the workshop from Boston is guest speaker Brian Bagdasarian from HubSpot, who will be sharing his expertise on Conversational Growth Strategy. Bagdasarian leads the development of Conversational Growth Strategy for HubSpot, working to educate the marketing world with best practices and insights into the world of chatbots and conversational marketing. Some of the topics Bagdasarian will cover during the workshop include: live chat management, conversational strategy, live chat/chatbot implementation and optimization of conversational marketing. The workshop takes place from 12pm to 2pm at Sarasota City Center (1819 Main Street), Suite 604. Free lunch and coffee included; RSVP required at the website below.

[Philanthropy]  Gulf Gate Rotary Club Donates Turkey Dinners Through CPC

The Gulf Gate Rotary Club is continuing a giving tradition by donating turkey dinners to famliies in need. For the past 35 years, the Gulf Gate Rotary Club has donated and delivered 75 turkeys, assorted groceries and canned goods to the Child Protection Center (CPC). The CPC is then able to distribute these meals to clients and their families at all four CPC locations in Sarasota, Venice, North Port and Arcadia. The mission of CPC is the prevention, intervention and treatment of child abuse. CPC has been serving Sarasota and DeSoto Counties since 1980, and last year the organization provided services to over 84,000 individuals, including forensic interviews, prevention education workshops, supervised visits and trauma-informed therapy.

[TODAY]  MUSEUM: Woodblock Prints from Post-War Japan , November 18 – May 5

In the wake of the Second World War, woodblock prints emerged as a channel of diplomacy and friendship between Japan and the U.S. Printmaking continues to be a vibrant and ever-changing art form well into the 21st century. This exhibition draws the Ringling Museum of Art’s extensive holdings of postwar Japanese prints and local collections. On display will be works by key artists including Onchi Koshiro, Hiratsuka Un’ichi, Saito Kiyoshi, Yoshida Chizuko, and Hoshi Joshi, including a number of new acquisitions and never-before exhibited pieces.

Misatango, a tango mass from Argentina, combines the passion of tango with the ancient beauty of the Latin mass sung to the melodies and rhythms of the streets of Buenos Aires. Dancers from Sarasota Ballet’s Studio Company, choreographed by Elizabeth Bergmann, perform while Argentine composers Astor Piazzolla, Martin Palermi and Ariel Ramirez’s evocative Misa Criolla captures the sounds of Argentina with guitars, accordion, strings, voices and percussion.

[SOON]  THEATER: Marvin Gaye: Prince of Soul , November 28 – January 13

After several years of requests from theater patrons, Sheldon Rhoden will reprise the role of Marvin Gaye. This original show begins in the 1950s at the start of Gaye's career with Motown and follows its twists and turns until his untimely death in the mid-1980s.

Art Center Instructors exhibition will feature the talented local and visiting Art Center Sarasota instructors. A second gallery will offer Stephen McMennamy, an Atlanta-based artist, his first solo exhibition featuring his time-based video collages. Artist Peter Gatzambide will exhibit a recent series of assemblage paintings and works on paper in his first solo exhibition at Art Center Sarasota.

Santa Claus narrates the story of Buddy, who was raised at the North Pole. Prior to Christmas, Buddy learns he’s human, not an elf. He convinces Santa to let him return to New York City to find his real father. He finds his father (who’s on the naughty list) and a step brother who doesn’t believe in Santa. Buddy decides it’s up to him to bring back the spirit of Christmas to his family and all of New York.

[SOON]  DANCE: Raphael Xavier: Point of Interest , November 30 – December 1, 7:30PM

Crackling with his signature bravado and high-energy physicality, Raphael Xavier shares the stage with a multigenerational cast, performing a series of solos, duets and quintets in his newest work, featuring a soundscape of beats, spoken word poetry and musical rhythms. 

Distilling the art of break dancing to its purest form, Raphael Xavier takes this movement vocabulary to uncharted territory. Point of Interest ventures into the "mature" space for hip-hop dance, following the standard of traditional Breaking aesthetics while pushing the boundaries of a culture and dance form commonly associated with youth.

[SOON]  PERFORMANCE: Perfect Pairs , November 30 – December 3

Ward Stare leads Sarasota Orchestra in a program pairing exquisite French music with rich German orchestral fare. Twin sisters Christina and Michelle Naughton provide double the drama in Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos, while Ravel’s masterwork appropriately uses the word “delicious” in its subtitle. Mozart’s music from Thamos, King of Egypt is a rarely heard delight and German Romantic giant Richard Strauss’ operatic suite concludes the program in an explosion of orchestral virtuosity.
