A global holiday takes place every year on June 8, with hundreds of events hosted around the world celebrating the blue parts of the planet. World Oceans Day will be celebrated in true philanthropic Floridian fashion next Saturday with Beach.com. The Sarasota-based travel blog and website seeks to not only be a reliable resource for traveling to seaside destinations, but also encompasses a beach cleanup initiative that aims to keep oceans beautiful, clean and accessible for generations to come.

By collaborating with Sarasota County, and partnering with a number of businesses on Siesta Key and throughout Florida, a large scale volunteer cleanup on ‘America’s No.1 Beach’ is set to sweep the beach by foot, and with ambition. The family-friendly event will kick-off with a community yoga class at sunrise with Beach.com content managers Yasmin Parsloe and Tara Caguiat, two FSU alumnae and Sarasota natives with a passion for keeping the ocean clean and its ecosystems healthy. “If you are anything like us, you’re sick of walking the beach and finding beer cans or plastic bottles left behind by beachgoers,” says Caguiat.

An empowering hashtag was spearheaded for the event, coined #NotOnMyBeach, which Parsloe and Caguiat hope will not only make the public event easily shareable on social media forums, but will encourage people to take localized ownership of their beloved home beaches and take a stand on the trash and pollution that get left behind in the sand, or washes up on shore. “We want to tackle the plastic pollution epidemic head-on, with a sassy and fun approach that says, ‘Hey, we don’t care how old you are, where you’re from or what you’re celebrating on our beaches, but it’s not okay to leave trash behind,’” she says. “We’re convinced that if we can raise awareness and reverse the social norm about consumption, waste and littering, we can make an impact beyond Sarasota.”

Beach.com will be handing out ocean-saving T-shirts to the first 100 participants to arrive the morning of the event. In addition, there will be freebie giveaways such as reef-safe Stream2Sea Sunscreens and Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen samples. The cleanup will also pause for a hosted raffle of donated prizes, including a level 1 freediving class from Dive Source Florida, an intro to freediving class from Tidal Freediving and a gift certificate to Sub Zero Ice Cream. Youth music group The Garbage-Men Band will be in attendance to play live music on instruments they creatively make from collected garbage and recycled materials. Meanwhile, a handcrafted frame will be set up at the cleanup, where attendees can hang their trash on hooks along the frame to showcase their personal efforts and findings.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated, close-toed shoes, sun protection (hats, long sleeves, sunscreen) and a mat/towel if they want to participate in yoga. Cleanup supplies will be provided, as well as snacks and coffee, provided by local supporting businesses.

A World Oceans Day Beach.com Cleanup will take place at Siesta Key Beach Pavillion on Saturday, June 8 from 8am to 11am. Sunrise yoga starts at 7am.
