Why Mentoring Matters

SRQ Story Project

Many promising students get sidetracked and step away from their education when hurdles appear, not knowing where to turn for help. Mentoring matters for these students. A study showed that at-risk young adults who met regularly with trusted mentors were 55% more likely to enroll in postsecondary education than those without mentors.

Students who request mentors come from various academic, socio-demographic and economic backgrounds. They have in common a desire for a trusted advisor who will be available for them as they navigate the terrain from high school to college and/or career. The Education Foundation of Sarasota County is seeking volunteer mentors who genuinely care about kids and take great satisfaction in knowing they contribute to students’ success. Caring mentors augment the work of the EFSC, which provides professional and experienced leadership, organization and infrastructure to orchestrate student and mentor success.
