In an effort to share knowledge and resources, and strengthen the infrastructure of the Black theatre landscape in the United States, seven of the country’s freestanding, independent Black theatres – including Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) – have forged a new alliance. The National Association of Black Theatre Building Owners (NABTBO) will work together to ensure there are stages where Black voices take center stage and are heard by diverse audiences. “The distinction between our spaces and the varied Black theatre companies, festivals and collegiate programs that are responsible for the consistent amplification of Black voices is measured solely in brick and mortar,” said WBTT Founder/Artistic Director Nate Jacobs. “The latter community can assist Black playwrights as they develop and stage their work in spaces that mirror their cultural perspective and background. Our theatres provide spaces where diverse audiences can regularly enjoy the results of these artistic endeavors.”
