[Visual Arts]  Sarasota Contemporary Dance Hosts Videography Course for Local Students
Andrew Fabian, andrew.fabian@srqme.com

Even before the pandemic, the video production industry had the feel of the Wild West—burgeoning, full of possibility and with plenty of gold to go around. Reminiscent of the early days of the internet boom, video production represents one of the few industries where a lucrative career can be made with a small portfolio of work and a dash of formal training. And into this high-demand, high-reward field goes a small group of local high school and college students after they complete a video production boot camp created in collaboration between New College of Florida (NCF), Sarasota Contemporary Dance (SCD) and a roster of experienced production professionals.

The brainchild of Leymis Bolaños-Wilmott, SCD’s founder and artistic director, the hands-on course is inspired by the success her dance company found in producing shows virtually. “Video production and streaming were huge for [SCD] during the pandemic,” says Wilmott, “so I spoke with our production team about ways to get younger people involved.” The course, called Digital + Production, includes a behind-the-scenes pre-production walkthrough; three workshops in camera, lighting design and broadcasting; and culminates with the students shadowing the professional production team during a live performance and broadcast of SCD's main stage show at Cook Theatre in mid-October. Leading the classes will be lighting designer and videographer Celeste N. Silsby Mannerud, sound engineer Alex Pinchin, and producer Brett Hoehne, the creative muscle behind SCD’s recent award for best virtual production.

For fourth-year NCF Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies major Nicole Silvera, the short, month-long course is an opportunity to pad her resume with more skills. “I’m still a performer first and foremost,” says Silvera, “but I felt like after everything moved online during the pandemic it became really important to have more digital skills.” Silvera, who was born in Florida and has lived in St. Petersburg, is also quick to point out that the connections to local arts organizations certainly make Sarasota a more attractive possibility for starting a career after graduating. “Part of what was so enticing about the program is that you get your name on a list with other arts organizations,” she says, “so even though I have an adventurous spirit and want to see other places, I can still see myself staying here.”

Another highlight of the program is that, courtesy of a Mellon Foundation grant procured by NCF, the course is free. “A lot of our funding is predicated on creating sustainable community impact,” says NCF’s director of community outreach Stacey Campo, “so this is a great opportunity to connect our students to the community’s arts organizations.”

Though the program already had its initial meet-and-greet on September 10th, there are still spots available for local high school and college students. The next in-studio learning session is September 24th, where students will observe a performance by Ariel Blue.

To sign up, email Leymis Bolaños-Wilmott at lwilmott@ncf.edu. No experience is necessary.

[SRQ Book Club]  Non-Fiction Book Review of 'You Can't Be Serious' by Kal Penn
BookStore1 Bookseller Roxanne Baker

Reading Kal Penn’s memoir is like getting a visit from that friend you always look forward to seeing for his well spun hilarious tales.  From his humble New Jersey upbringing to his acting in comedies such as National Lampoon’s Van Wilder to his work as Associate Director of the Office of Public Engagement during the Obama Administration, Penn certainly has the fodder for truly engaging stories.

Besides his good natured humor, what stands out in his memoir is his hearty resilience in following his acting passion regardless of his family’s skepticism and even harsher, the ludicrous Hollywood racism slung his way in auditions and movie shoots.

Jocularity proves the victor, as Penn regales the goofy humans loaning beat up cars for him to use for LA auditions, proposing insane ideas like Heels for Haiti during his White House duties, and his funny rebuttal DNC speech to Clint Eastwood’s RNC empty chair speech. Best of all, his affability includes his willingness to laugh at himself.

A gift for anyone in need of a laugh or pep talk, You Can’t Be Serious is loaded with a perfect blend of ‘you can’t make this stuff up’ and ‘don’t stop believing’ fun.

[Sailing]  The 50th Sunfish World Championship Comes to Sarasota

The Sarasota Sailing Squadron located on City Island has announced the 50th World Sunfish Championship will be coming to Sarasota in October 2021. The 100 competitors come from North, South, and Central America, the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Europe. They will be sailing in new boats supplied by Sunfish Direct. They have qualified previously in events held in their respective countries and represent the country's best sailors.

The Sunfish is a single-handed boat first built in the US in the 1950s. It is the boat seen all over the world on lakes, bays, seas and oceans. World Championships have been held in many countries since 1970 and is the most anticipated regatta for sunfish sailors.

The week-long event will be held October 23-29. Twelve races are planned during the week. A "lay day" is scheduled if needed for inclement weather. That day is usually a time for visitors to enjoy the many amenities that Sarasota has to offer. Many family members also attend and join in the Squadron's planned activities, enhancing the experience for everyone. The 50th Regatta organizers plan to invite past World competitors to attend which will bring many more sailors to enjoy the racing via spectator boats and entertainment events.

Expect great sailing from FL sailors Jeff Linton and Mike Ingham who have won many regattas leading up to the 50th year competition.

The dream of one man became a cultural tour de force for Sarasota’s performing arts community. In 1999, actor and playwright Nate Jacobs founded the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, establishing a unique dramatic company to present and explore the Black experience. After twenty years of challenges and hard-won triumphs, the troupe experienced one of its toughest years yet in 2020. The killing of George Floyd ignited a national reckoning on race, and the COVID-19 pandemic made theatres go dark. Drawing on the resilient spirit that carried the troupe across previous hardships, WBTT has reimagined ways to stage its performances and fulfill its mission to promote inclusion and diversity in the arts. As a new generation of artists comes onboard, the troupe also finds successful approaches to address racism and lift others up through opportunity, mentorship and outreach. Produced by WEDU PBS in partnership with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County with generous funding from the George J. & Alice Pugh Donor Advised Fund. The film is available at https://www.wedu.org/shows/documentaries/this-light-of-mine/

Among the most influential films of the postwar era, Roberto Rossellini’s Journey to Italy (Viaggio in Italia) charts the declining marriage of a couple from England (Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders) on a trip in the countryside near Naples. More than just the anatomy of a relationship, Rossellini’s masterpiece is a heartrending work of emotion and spirituality. Considered a predecessor to the existentialist works of Michelangelo Antonioni and hailed as a groundbreaking modernist work by the legendary film journal Cahiers du cinemá, Journey to Italy is a breathtaking cinematic benchmark. This On Screen will show on October 7 at 1pm at Historic Asolo Theater.
