Fiction Review: It’s The End of The World and I'm in my Bathing Suit by Justin A. Reynolds

ROCKETKIDS

“I'm only doing laundry ONCE this ENTIRE SUMMER,” says narrator Eddie as he explains his perfectly devised plan for the best summer ever.

In It’s The End of The World and I'm In My Bathing Suit, a tonally dark story is paired with humor to show that any situation is what you make it. Eddie speaks directly to his audience as he describes his plan to wear every item of clothing in his wardrobe– yup, even that ugly Christmas sweater– until the day of Beach Bash, the biggest party of the year. He plans to wear his last clean item, his pineapple print swim trunks, to enjoy the beach breeze at Lake Erie until his mom uncovers his pile of stinky laundry that's been building up for half the summer. Eddie's plan culminates in a devastating defeat as his mom and step dad leave to enjoy the best day of the year and leave him behind to do the unthinkable: laundry. When the power suddenly goes out mid cycle, Eddie searches for anyone he can find, assembling a team of the last five kids left in the neighborhood, and for all they know, the last people anywhere, all while wearing his last clean piece of clothing.

Together, the neighborhood kids battle with emotions, longing for their families they once craved space from, and survival. This comedic journey draws in readers as Eddie navigates his life with ADHD and his now missing family, all the while remaining honest with himself and readers about his most eventful day of summer. And what happened to every other person on Earth? You'll have to wait for Eddie to tell us more in the next book!
