The heroine Ariadne must confront the Creature of Fear three times before ultimately emerging triumphant in Martha Graham’s iconic Errand Into the Maze, a surreal adaptation of the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, here recast to symbolize inner demons and fear of intimacy. Premiering in 1947 with Graham herself performing the role of Ariadne, the ever-popular ballet remains in the Martha Graham Dance Company repertory, and came to Sarasota this past February at the invitation of the Sarasota Ballet.
