While conversation continues to swirl around these road improvements, roundabouts definitely have a local fan base in Sarasota, where voters celebrated particular success stories at Five Points and Burns Court. Siesta Key Beach improvements came in as the close runner-up, while the successes at Cat Depot and the opening of the State Street Garage tied as second runners-up this year.—JO

James Griffin (on roundabouts): They slow down the traffic to a safer speed, yet keep it moving. Circles in places like Ringling Boulevard and Main Street are proving the point. I understand that many more roundabouts are planned for Tamiami Trail as it passes through the city. This would be a much better situation than the frustrating jam at locations like Fruitville Road and University Parkway, where they meet 41 and where tempers flare as people wait and wait. Lina Meinhardt (on Cat Depot): We adopted our cat Molly from there and I go once a week to “love” the cats living there. The whole thing is run by loving, hard-working people. The animals have been brought in by their owner’s death’s or moving to nursing homes, relocating, various reasons. Anyone who has not visited Cat Depot should visit. It is not World Peace but a cuddly, warm cat safe is another feather in Sarasota’s cap.
