[Philanthropy]  ARC To Bring More Pets to Sarasota Surgeries
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Cutting down on pet overpopulation takes more effort than a Bob Barker sign-off. The Animal Rescue Coalition has been working throughout Southwest Florida to make sure owners have the capability to get their cats and dogs spayed or neutered. Now a grant from the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation will assist in the mission by giving pet owners easier means to get animals to veterinarians to perform these surgeries.

A $70,000 grant awarded by the foundation this month will be used by ARC officials to buy a new transport vehicle to accommodate 25-30 pet transports each day, nearly double the capacity of a previous mobile clinic operation.  “This will increase our reach and the services we provide,” said ARC Executive Director Gisele Pintchuck. The spay-and-neuter operation has been important to ARC; the organization since 2002 has helped provide the operations to more than 38,000 animals.

Pintchuck said the transport vehicle will primarily serve more rural areas like DeSoto and Charlotte counties. Animals will be transported to a new 3,800-square-foot facility in Sarasota just east of Interstate-75 near the Fruitville Library. The new facility handles any size of cat or dog, and has a separate den for feral cats. Pintchuck said the efforts to cut down on overpopulation follow a “tried-and-tested” practice pioneered by the Humane Alliance. ARC is one of 139 clinics in the country following the model. “Progressive spay/neuter efforts led by both Sarasota and Manatee counties are contributing to the decrease each year in animals being euthanized,” she said.

[Good Bite]  Seasonal Salvation
Kaye Warr

What does the holiday season mean to you? For me, the holidays usually entail a combination of family, friends and food. Last week, I spent some time serving breakfast at the Salvation Army and my perspective on the holiday season expanded. A core team of workers, assisted by a revolving door of volunteers, begin at 4am every morning preparing the donated food and then serving it to the large homeless population that sleep outside their gates in downtown Sarasota. Whatever your position on panhandlers may be, my position on food is: it should be available to everyone. The people who shuffle through the line are grateful to a fault. They are thankful to have a clean warm place to eat a fresh hot meal and I, for one, am thankful that there is someone in our community to provide these things. The Salvation Army is open 365 days a year, including Thanksgiving, Christmas and all eight days of Chanukah. What does the holiday season mean to you? To me, this year, it means family, friends and food for all.

[Expansion]  Caldwell Trust Relocates

Caldwell Trust Company moved into its new headquarters on Center Road in Venice just before the holidays and will start the new year in its new building. Chartered in 1993, Caldwell Trust Company acquired its first client the next day and established headquarters in a now-outgrown space in Venice. It opened its first Sarasota office in 1998 and replaced it in 2009 with a larger space, on Main Street in Sarasota, which remains in operation.

[SRQ Writer Flexes Culinary Muscles]

SRQ Staff Writer Phil Lederer is known in our office for his quick wit and serious talent as a wordsmith. We’ve never known Phil to be much of a cook – but that could quickly change! Phil recently appeared on his first-ever cooking show with notable Sarasota restaurateur Chef Rolf Zahnd of Salt Water Café. On the set of Chef Rolf’s New Florida Kitchen was a selection of rich, delicious fare: a starter of creamy crab soup with leeks and potatoes, red snapper and cheesy polenta served with asparagus and a custardy apple pie. Phil served as sous chef in preparing the cheesy polenta, which was served alongside Chef Rolf’s red snapper. Photo evidence of the day’s events show Phil at the helm of a steaming pot of polenta wielding a spoon. And we must say, we are very impressed with Phil’s newfound culinary expertise. Phil, was able to speak to Chef Rolf about SRQ Daily—which will soon be celebrating 10 years of inbox expertise. We can’t wait to watch Phil’s episode, which is set to air in January.
