[Nightlife]  Learning to Chill with Rainer Scheer
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

Celebrate your Saturday night in style with the return of Chillounge Night, the annual celebration from founder and organizer Rainer Scheer bringing performance, music, fashion, food and its trademark laid-back swank for a night of revelry and community under the stars. Dubbed "Cirque du Chill," this year sees Chillounge partnering with the Circus Arts Conservatory and Nock Productions for a themed event featuring jugglers, aerialists, dancers, art installation and live music, all within the natural beauty of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.

“Sarasota is a circus town and we have all these wonderful acts,” said Scheer, who credits efforts from other community leaders such as Pedro Reis of the Circus Arts Conservatory and event partner of four years, BMW of Sarasota, in making this year’s themed event possible. “And I am very proud that Selby Gardens allows to put the event on and happy to have them behind me.”

Thrill-seekers will be enraptured by Joseph Dominic Bauer’s Wheel of Destiny and Nock Productions’ sway pole performers, while Sarasota’s circus-hounds will get a laugh from circus legend, Chucko the clown. Uncover the secrets of Vladimir the Mystery Juggler or get gobsmacked by the impressive feats of balance and strength from Duo Romanesc. It’s a star-studded lineup from Ana Molinari’s Fashion Show to performances from Gypsy Allure and Miss Gena, with the promise of high-flying acts like the Sarasota premiere of the international AeroSphere Aerial Balloon Show overhead and a high-society feel all around.

“Chillounge Night always has a great demographic,” said Scheer, who hopes that this year’s theme will help expand it even more, combining Sarasota’s circus enthusiasts and nightlife partiers. And after eight successful years, Scheer still tried to raise the bar. “I am just somebody who loves a challenge – I want something different, I’m thinking outside the box,” said Scheer, who jokes that he will be the only one not able to chill the night of the party. “But I’m always so proud and happy when I see everything come together and everybody has a great time.”

The 8th Annual BMW of Sarasota Chillounge Night kicks off this Saturday at 7pm in the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Tickets are $25 in advance and $40 at the door. Although the party has been rescheduled due to weather considerations, Scheer reports that all previously scheduled performers are still on board.

[Ribbon-Cutting]  CFAS Opens To Public
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

The old is new again, or at least renewed. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Center For Architecture—Sarasota offered a first glimpse to the public of what many architects are calling one of the most important restorations of classic design in the region.

The Orange Avenue building, once a furniture store but most recently the print shop for Sarasota County government, stands as one of the last commercial buildings designed during the Sarasota School of Architecture era. Joe Farrell, one of the original architects along with the late William Rupp, praised the work done by Guy Peterson Modern Architecture to restore and improve the structure. “It’s better than it was originally,” Farrell said. “They honored all the concepts and extended them here as well.”

And more improvements are still planned to the site. Officials have already added some features like a lecture hall and exhibit space in the former furniture showroom, and will improve the landscaping on the north and south sides of the building. Cynthia Peterson, CFAS board chair, said the project has brought many groups together as a community. “So many have come together, not just in design but our subcontractor friends,” she said. “Everyone is so committed to this being the best building in town.”

Within months, the space will both serve as venue for design-centric events and home to University of Florida graduate-level architecture courses. This brings a big university to town that now has a presence here in Sarasota,” said retired county commissioner Joe Barbetta, who lobbied during his time in government to forge a partnership with UF and CFAS regarding the structure. Peterson said she was enthusiastic new architecture would come from a place so important to architectural history. “There will be a legacy with new students and their contributions,” she said.

[Daily Shop]  Little Luxuries
,

The sense of smell is our most primal sense, and the strongest one after sight. LAFCO New York understands this all too well. Their line of luxury candles, available at Black Bird Home Gallery, captures the nuances of fragrance with warm and enveloping scents such as refreshing cucumber thyme or romantic, but subtle lilac.  These favorite fragrances are now available in Little Luxuries Candle Tins. Despite their diminutive size, each pastel-hued candle delivers a lasting dose of aromatherapy and ambiance, and is made from soy-based wax.

[From the Chef]  Constructing a Perfect Chowder
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Would you guess a great stone crab recipe could come from a contractor? Bennett Contracting shared this recipe with us, discovered through connections in the hospitality industry, that seemed perfect in this seafood-loving region. Better build up an appetite because you will want seconds.

Sweet Potato Corn Crab Chowder

Ingredients: 1 cup sweet potatoes (baked, peeled and mashed); 2 cups seasoned chicken stock; 1 cup fresh corn kernels; 1/2 cup creamed corn; 2 cups heavy cream; 1/2 cup real maple syrup; to taste cinnamon; to taste salt; 6 oz. fresh crab meat; 2 cooked bacon strips, crumbled

In heavy bottom stock pot add chicken stock, mashed sweet potatoes, both types of corn and maple syrup. Slowly bring to a boil. Next, add heavy cream slowly and mix constantly. Simmer on the stove for 20 minutes whisking occasionally. Chowder will thicken. Once the chowder reaches the right consistency season with cinnamon and salt. Garnish with fresh crab meat and crumbled bacon.
