"For this particular position, most important is the ability to adapt to our culture, and to provide leadership to the board and the staff, then basically get out of staff's way."

[Philanthropy]  Search Is On For New Gulf Coast CEO
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

A search for the new leader of the Gulf Coast Community Foundation is underway, and executives say candidates from within and outside the organization will be vetted and reviewed. A national search will be led by the firm Spencer Stuart, a world leader in executive searches, along with a committee made up of Gulf Coast Board of Directors members. “It is important that we conduct a thorough search to find the right leader to advance Gulf Coast’s vital and growing philanthropic work in our region,” said Gulf Coast Board Chair Ben Hanan.  “Our community, our donors and our nonprofit partners can count on us for that.”

Teri Hansen, retiring CEO of Gulf Coast, said more than one sound candidate for the job could come from within the organization, but whether a new leader comes from inside the foundation or from across the country, a competent staff is in place to make sure there is no lapse in momentum or efforts on the part of Gulf Coast as an organization. “There are no bounds on this search,” said Hansen. Spencer Stuart will both conduct head-hunting efforts and vet unsolicited candidates; resumes may be sent to gulfcoast@spencerstuart.com.

Hansen herself previously worked as vice president of gift planning and donor relations at the Cleveland Foundation before heading Gulf Coast, and also previously served as chief executive of a smaller community foundation in Indiana. Hansen’s own criteria for this job are simple: “For this particular position, most important is the ability to adapt to our culture, and to provide leadership to the board and the staff, then basically get out of staff’s way.”

Hansen announced in March that she would leave Gulf Coast on June 30 to become the president and CEO of the Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation.

[Good Bite]  The Bakery Around The Corner
Kaye Warr

Christine Nordstrom is the fun and fearless proprietor of Sift Bakehouse, purveyor of delicious gourmet made-from-scratch treats that before now were available only at select Farmers Markets and choice special events such as the recent Sarasota Film Festival.  As of April 28 (that’s next week!), Sift Bakehouse is downtown Sarasota’s newest bakery around the corner – this particular corner being Pineapple Avenue and McAnsh Square. I was lucky enough to attend the preview opening and delighted in watching (and tasting) the first batch of cookies baked and then served in this location. The bakery is a charming space filled with whimsical touches such the large wall frame of cookie cutters and Christine is proud to have partnered with some of the friends she has made at various markets and events and she will be selling select local products as well as her own delectable confections.

The vessel, to be dubbed the R/V Thunder and docked on the Island as a base for Mote’s research in Charlotte Harbor, is being donated to the Lab by Russ and Ginny Gifford of Sarasota. The 46-foot wooden vessel was handcrafted by George Luzier, a Sarasota boat builder who will also be present and honored during the event.

[Partner Spotlight]  Goodwill Manasota: Serving Those Who Serve

There are few people in our community who are more selfless than our veterans. For the brave individuals who have pledged their service to protect and defend the nation, returning to everyday life post-service can be a difficult and taxing endeavor. Goodwill Manasota is devoted to helping veterans become successful in our community so they feel valued, involved and important. The organization serves as a conduit to the many available resources and individuals within the region to connect veterans with the resources they need. In 2014, Goodwill was able to assist over 500 veterans and their families through the help of personal case managers to ensure they were connected to the right people to seek employment, properly apply for benefits, enroll in mental health programs to food assistance centers.

With the myriad agencies dedicated to veterans, Goodwill Manasota acknowledges the amount of time and energy it takes to get the connected to the right people for help. “We developed the Veterans Resource Guide, a 60-page booklet featuring an extensive list of services and resources, strictly to help Veterans find assistance and success,” said Bob Rosinsky, CEO of Goodwill Manasota. “Through our Veterans Services Program, collaboration with community leaders and innovative programs such as the Special Emergency Resources for Veterans (SERV) Initiative, a special emergency fund for times of acute and immediate need, we are finding ways to help veterans in their time of need.” To find out more about the work Goodwill is accomplishing with veterans in our community, visit www.experiencegoodwill.org.

Goodwill Manasota is a 2015 SRQ Story Project partner and the featured non-profit organization this April. To learn how your donations and purchases make an impact, visit them online.
