[Philanthropy]  Sarasota Fireball Runners Among Best This Year
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

The 2,000-mile Fireball Run ended this weekend, and two Sarasota teams working closely together finished in the top 10. Along the way, teams dealt with some game drama, vehicle trouble and personal tragedy, but hope the event ultimately raises awareness of the cause central to the run, finding missing children.

Sarasota philanthropist Ariane Dart, who won last year’s run with racing partner Tracy Leichtenburger, came in second place this year, but was also dealing with significant complications at the start of the race. Leichtenburger’s father passed away just as the race was getting started, so for five days on the run, Anna Nekoranac served as her co-pilot. Nekoranac was racing with her husband Bengt Niebuhr on Team Firefly, the team racing to represent Forty Carrots Family Center in the race. Dart and Nekoranac both serve on the Forty Carrots board of trustees, and a system was developed to allow the two to ride together in the first five days of the race while earning points for both teams. “I was extremely fortunate that my friend Anna offered to step in,” Dart said. “She and I were a phenomenal team and were in first place for six days.”

After Leichtenburger returned, Nekoranac finished the last two days of the run with Team Firefly and ultimately finished in seventh place, an impressive finish from a team with both members racing for their first time. “Both Ariana and my husband are really good drivers. That was one advantage we had,” Nekoranac said. “But I had also done tremendous background research.” As part of the race, teams stop in several cities each day to participate in puzzles and challenges, something that was key to winning, Nekoranac said. The race was also demanding because there were optional puzzles available through the day, which were truly mandatory for any team hoping to finish with a top score.

The winning team was ultimately the Central Florida-based Team M.I.B., but three other Sarasota-connected teams also raced. Team Bronco finished in 22nd, Hope and Glory in 25th and Team Honey Buns in 41st. A total 44 teams competed this year.

Film crews followed the race, and footage will be edited into episodes that will stream on Netflix next year.

[Community]  Call To Artists for the 2015 Sarasota Craft Show
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

With the 2015 Sarasota Craft Show just around the corner and space filling fast, festival organizers are putting out a call for artists to submit their work for consideration in one of the remaining booths. Organized by American Art Marketing, the Sarasota Craft show annually gives more than 100 artists both local and national the opportunity to place their work before the eyes of thousands of curious shoppers and collectors. With limited space, booths are still available for all categories of fine art, including painting, photography, sculpture, glass, wood, furniture, fiber art and more.

“We’re very impressed with the depth and scope of the area arts community,” said Richard Rothbard, president of American Art Marketing, whose coordinators and judges will hand-select top entries based on technical skill, quality of worksmanship and originality. “Our show draws a discriminating and educated audience,” said Rothbard. “They understand that this is one of the nation’s most sophisticated fine art and craft shows and expect the best.”

The 2015 Sarasota Craft Show runs Dec. 4-6; it drew nearly 5,000 reported attendees last year. Interested artists can follow the link below to the Sarasota Craft Show official website for information about show requirements and booth fees.

[Tuesday Tech Talk]  Small Step for Privacy, Giant Leap for Cybersecurity
Pedro Perez, pedro@nuevoadvertising.com

Did you know simply downloading your email or clicking on web site advertisements may add/download tracking software to your device? Advances in technology now enable advertisers and marketers to track your online habits through the collection of this usage data. Have you ever clicked on an ad on a website for something that interests you, then found either the ad or a similar ad popping up on other websites, seemingly following you around? This is due to the new trend called “Behavioral Marketing” or "Target Marketing." When you perform a certain task online, your browser is flagged for that particular interest by all sites using Google search engine tools. And today, most websites you visit will preempt advertisements with those best suited to your interests, favorite products or brands, based on your past online use.

For marketers, your behavior is essential for them to know so they can design advertising and promotional messages that resonate with you, the user, thus maximizing the advertisement’s impact.

Email works in a similar way. When you download an email and its images to your computer, you acknowledge you received that email. Marketers are able to track how many times you open that email, what you click on and if you forward that email to someone. They can even tell if you chose not to open the email.

Privacy is a big deal today, but you do have some control over how you are tracked. Here are a few simple steps you can take to limit the amount of information you allow web or email services to track. First, let's address email services. Most email client software has a privacy setting, and it is turned off by default – meaning you CAN be tracked. To turn privacy ON, just go into your preferences setting and reset your “privacy” settings so images will NOT download automatically. This change will download all of the content in an email except images. If you approve the content of the email as appropriate, you can choose to download the images. Once you acknowledge the download of images, email tracking will occur, but it will be only for things that you're likely interested in.

Mobile devices have a similar setting called “limited advertising,” which allows you to choose to download images from emails. This does the same thing as your email client on your desktop, laptop or tablet. The good news is, you have a lot of control of who you allow to track you and your online use.

As for web browsing and advertisements, there are a number of ad blockers in the market that will limit the amount of advertisements you're exposed to. This is a personal preference and something you should take the time to explore. Just remember, once you click on an ad, you have basically said you're interested in that product and/or brand and you give permission to that company to market it to you in the future. If that's a problem for you, simply open your browser preferences and delete all your cookies and cache each day, or set up your browser to do this automatically. This action resets your computer’s website memory and will provide little to no history to carry on to the next day.

I hope you're enjoying my Technology Tidbits. And find them interesting and compelling. My philosophy with this column is to make you aware of tech trends that can affect you and your business. Now that you know the potential risks and benefits of website and email tracking, you should feel empowered to make an educated decision on when and how you choose to be tracked. If you're interested in a specific topic or concern, email me and I will make sure I address it in a future Tech Tuesday review.

[Recognition]  Firefighters Earn Congressional Award

A team of Sarasota County Fire Department employees received the Unit Citation Award, a Congressional Fire and Rescue Service Award, at a ceremony on Monday. The award was for actions in response to a 2014 gasoline tanker crash on Interstate-75. Rep. Vern Buchanan honored several local award winners, including Sarasota County Fire Department Lt. Jason Wilkins, Lt. Jamie Mann, firefighter/EMT Nicholas Jones, firefighter/paramedic Sean Sponable and firefighter/EMT Clayton Huber. The team was nominated by Fire Chief Michael Regnier after placing themselves in jeopardy by wading through gasoline and extricating the driver of a truck after it rolled over and crashed into a ditch along I-75 the morning of Aug. 27, 2014.
