Friday Weekend Edition

"Payne Park is a beautiful park & should be one of the main destinations for any tourist or local in Sarasota, & it's been completely underutilized."

- Simone Steiff-Pollux, Cafe in the Park

[Music]  Hymn For Her Hits Payne Park
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

Café in the Park continues its Live Music in the Park series tonight with a performance from stripped-down blues rockers Hymn For Her. Fresh off a European tour & an appearance on NPR, Hymn For Her marks the third installment for the fledgling series, which previously featured Irish trio Clover's Revenge & the jazzy duo bassist Michael Ross & saxophonist David Pate. The intimate dining shows are just part of Café in the Park owner Simone Steiff-Pollux’s vision for the future of Payne Park.

“It’s just a part of the nature of the park,” said Steiff-Pollux, whose café stands perched atop one of the central swells of the rolling green. Festivals & events come through Payne Park semi-regularly, but Steiff-Pollux wanted more music, & perhaps more importantly, “we wanted [the performance] to be more intimate.”

Depending on the weather, visiting musicians can play either under the outdoor awning or even within the open glassy confines of the café proper, creating a cozy & singular atmosphere for a night dining in the park. “And it won’t be one type of music,” said Steiff-Pollux, who slated Tres guitarist Renecito to perform on Dec. 4. “It will be all types of music.”

Though Live Music in the Park is an intimate affair, Steiff-Pollux imagines it could add to the growing momentum around Payne Park, pointing to November’s Rock For A Cause Battle of the Bands, traditionally held in Five Points Park but relocating to Payne Park this year. No one’s putting a cart before the horse, but a real annual music festival in Payne Park would be just swell, according to Steiff-Pollux.

“Payne Park is a beautiful park & should be one of the main destinations for any tourist or local in Sarasota,” said Steiff-Pollux. “And it’s been completely underutilized. We’re creating a presence.”

Hymn For Her performs at Café in the Park in Payne Park beginning tonight at 7:30pm & running until 9pm. With a limited menu for the event but now serving beer & wine on the premises, Steiff-Pollux is geared for heavy traffic but it could get crowded.

[PINC]  Salvaged and Stunning
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Most portrait artists work in paint, but Diederick Kraaijeveld uses discarded wood to create photo-realistic images—and amazingly does so without the help of computers. The Dutch artist will be one of the speakers at this year’s PINC Sarasota event on Dec. 10. SRQ asked him questions about his craft.

Has technology impacted your ability to make realistic works out of wood?  It may be surprising to some people that know my pieces, but I use almost no technology in creating them. It is all just hard work and pure craftsmanship. I use an array of different quite old fashioned techniques, that I 'invented' myself. I decided to keep all my techniques to myself. It is the result, the piece of art, that tells the story. Since my pieces are quite photo-realistic, a lot of people have the idea I use computer graphics. Even though I do not tell about my techniques, I nowadays do tell people I do not use computer graphics. I do use a jigsaw-machine (so not a hand-held tool) but that is the most flashy piece in my workshop. In looking for wood, I only use gloves to sort through the piles. It is a very hands-on job that I have. And I love it.

Is there a deeper message you hope to communicate in your images through the use of discarded wood?  It is really amazing what one can find (if one has the eye for it) in piles of stuff that people throw away. I see every pile of rubbish, every building container as a treasure trove. It is not just I re-use materials to save the environment. As an historian by education, I really like the idea of using things that had a 'life' before. Sometimes I find pieces of wood that have many many different layers of paint, like a tree trunk has year rings. One can almost feel, smell the history of those pieces. I love the patin of those sometimes century old pieces of floorboard, as much as I love the odd colors of a seventies kitchen-cupboard-door. Every piece of wood tell a story, even though I do not know all these stories. There is no message other than the hope that people will look at 'rubbish' and 'old wood' in a different way after seeing my artwork. Maybe not be be more 'environmentally aware', but more to see the beauty in those pieces of wood. When I create portraits I try to use wood that had a meaning in the life of that person. I know that has a lot of impact.

[From The Chef]  Let It Flow
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Already craving holiday-themed imbibes? The cocktail-conceiving minds at Bonefish Grill won’t debut this new mix until Dec. 1, but shared the recipe so the ambitious home bartenders can kick off the season right.

Winter White Cosmo

Ingredients: 2 oz.Vodka; 0.25 oz. Cointreau; 0.5 oz. fresh lime juice/simple syrup mixture;1.5 oz. white cranberry juice; 3-4 cranberries

Combine ingredients over ice in shaker tin.  Shake and strain into chilled martini glass.  For a festive touch garnish with 3-4 floating cranberries.

Tips: Make your own cranberry vodka infusion, by placing cranberries in your favorite vodka and allow it to infuse for 48- 72 hours; For a stronger Cosmo flavor, substitute your favorite Citron flavored vodka; For a fun twist and a little bit sweeter flavor use St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur in place of the Cointreau; Increase the volume of all ingredients by 10 and serve punch style. Freeze cranberries in a block of ice so not only does it keep the punch chilled but also looks fun and festive for your holiday party.
