"Florida became a great hotbed of creativity. It still is, with many animators coming out of Ringling, out of all parts of Florida."

[Film]  Eisner: Florida 'Hotbed for Creativity'
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Disney no longer has an animation house in Florida, but former CEO Michael Eisner still thinks having one here would be a great idea. “I though Florida was a great place for an animation studio,” he told SRQ. While he said having a working animation department at Disney Hollywood Studios when the park opened was mostly so people knew the studios weren’t all phony, he was pleased the Florida team produced such content as Brother Bear and Lilo and Stitch. “Florida became a great hotbed of creativity. It still is, with many animators coming out of Ringling, out of all parts of Florida. And there are all kinds of production still in Florida.”

Eisner discussed the matter during a media roundtable shortly before a speech at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. He was the first guest this year for the Ringling College Library Association Town Hall Lecture Series.

Today, Eisner runs his own company, The Tornante Company, which involved in a range endeavors from global sports media branding at Topps to creating entertainment content such as Netflix exclusive show BoJack Horseman

But while he wades these days in new video, the former Paramount Pictures president said reports of network television’s death were premature. “People though television would kill movies; movies are still alive,” he said. “It doesn’t happen. What happens is one and one adds up to 2.5. The audience just grows bigger, and the is more available access to programming. But when that transition happens, existing media gets very nervous.”

[Sports]  Bradenton Bracing for Racing
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Powerboats will return to the Manatee River in February for the Bradenton Area River Regatta, but many of the racers were already in town this week in anticipation of the event. Following a press conference in Bradenton, many convened at the corporate offices of SRQ for a meet-and-greet while gawkers looked at the powerful machines parked along Pineapple Avenue.

Among the racers ready to hit the water will be Ashton Rinker, of Blackhawk Rinker Racing, who won the regatta last year and went on to win the series and national championship race. He has traveled the county racing for sponsor Amsoil, but said the Bradenton event remains one of the high points of the year. “It’s a huge venue,” he said. “It’s pretty amazing how many people were here watching the race last year, and now we are expecting even more people.”

The inaugural regatta last year turned out to be the largest spectator event ever held in Manatee County. Now community leaders are expecting similar excitement this year. Michael Dongilli, senior vice president of event organizer ISM/USA, said the entire event this year will take over the shores on both the Bradenton and Palmetto sides of the river. He expects more than 100,000 spectators at the free event, schedule all day Feb. 6, and noted that the race has become incredibly important within the powerboat racing sport very quickly. The race in Bradenton will be the first sanctioned Powerboat Superleague Racing event of 2016. “This is one of the best events outside, probably the best outside of the big event in Pittsburgh,” said racer Tim Ludwig, a racer based in St. Petersburg who came in second in last year’s race. “It’s amazing to have this here.”

The event will also include the Action Kawasaki Suncoast Grand Prix for jetski racing and freestyle competitions, as well as flyboard competitions. All of the competitions draw out thrill seekers with world-class skills. Powerfly’s Kristin Smoker, who in just a year in competition is now ranked the No. 3 flyboarder in the world. “I feel like I’m a superhero when I’m doing it,” she said.

Defending SkiGP champion Kirk Britto, who will hit also the water at the event in February, says the excitement of the event will surely entice many to the sport. What draws him? “Horsepower, speed, danger, chicks,” he said. “It’s everything that makes this life exciting.”

[Politics]  Voting on When to Vote
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Sarasota city voters will soon decide whether city elections should be held in November instead in the spring.

Sarasota City Commissioners voted 3-2 Monday to place a referendum on the ballot this November which would reschedule future elections for Sarasota City Commission to be held in even-numbered years, concurrent with presidential or gubernatorial elections. Mayor Willie Shaw and Commissioner Susan Chapman voted against the action.

Supporters of the action say moving the election will increase turnout, while opponents fear city issues will be minimized as voters focus more attention of federal, state and county elections happening at the same time.

[Good Bite]  Brews at the Beach
Kaye Warr

The inaugural Evolution Beer Dinner held at Beach House Waterfront Restaurant on Monday night featured a menu focused on sustainable, local produce paired with craft beers from Darwin Brewing Company. Beach House proprietor Ed Chiles and his talented culinary team, led by Erik Walker, produced delectable dishes to pair with beers selected by Darwin Brewmaster Jorge Rosabal and Darwin General Manager Matt Cornelius.  The amuse-bouche was a Sunray Venus Clam Shooter in Circa 1926 Tangerine Wheat Beer. The subtle citrus notes in the tangy beer perfectly complemented the briny flavor of the locally produced Sunray Clams. The four courses that followed showcased components featuring local purveyors such as Cortez Bottarga, Darwin beer-braised Bradley Store Pig Cheek, and Richeys Chocolate Ganache, as well as Pickled Zucchini and Heirloom Tomato Jam made from produce grown at Beach House’s own Gamble Creek Farm. Darwin Brewing Company grew from the idea of brewing beers especially for the purpose of enjoying them with food, which is why the beers pair so well with food and why they source local, sustainable ingredients. I’m already looking forward to the next culinary and craft beer collaboration from these two local superstars.
