Friday Weekend Edition

"Choosing among our nine excellent films is like asking a mother to decide which is her favorite child."

- Roz Goldberg, 2016 Milman-Kover Jewish Film Festival

[Festival]  RIAF Unveils 2016 Line-Up

Ringling International Arts Festival organizations announced a line-up of performances for the 2016 festival that will showcase Australian acrobats, a Motown-inspired interpretation of Shakespeare’s Othello and a piano-centric circus performance by an artist from New Zealand. The festival runs Oct 13-16.

“Audiences will have the opportunity to experience a range of vibrant and exciting performances from all over the world and will be captivated by these internationally acclaimed artists,” said Dwight Currie, curator of performance. “These compelling, energetic performances brilliantly showcase their unique perspectives and diverse backgrounds.”

What will attendees see this year? Israeli cellist Matt Haimovitz will present The Bach Suites: A Moveable Feast, combining work of the master with more contemporary composers. Australian acrobatic team Gravity & Other Myths bring the new show, A Simple Space. Choreographer Doug Elkins presents two pieces, including Mo(or)town/Redux, a transformation of Othello, and Hapless Bizarre, a dancer-meets-clowns number. Eighth blackbird, a Grammy-winning sextet, brings it classical-meets-rock signature sound. Cinco Aero join forces with New Zealand artist Thomas Moncton for The Pianist, a “spectacularly catastrophic solo contemporary circus comedy act.” And comedy trio LMnO3: Lohse, Marquis & Oakley bring BANGS: made in America, an exploration of female identity.

Performance tickets cost $35, with discounts available in packages and for members at The Ringling. Tickets may be purchased at the Historic Asolo Theater Box Office, John M. McKay Visitors Pavilion, on Bay Shore Road, by calling 941-360-7399 or online at www.ringling.org.

[Film]  Jewish Film Fest Celebrates Heroes
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Both sports heroes and real world heroes will be celebrated at the 2016 Milman-Kover Jewish Film Festival, which kicks off next weekend with an event at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota. Nine programs submitted from filmmakers around the globe will bring to screen stories of Israel Defense Force draftees, odds-defying basketball stars and even a group of Muslims that harbored Jewish refugees in the wake of World War II.

“Choosing among our nine excellent films is like asking a mother to decide which is her favorite child,” said Roz Goldberg, festival founder and co-chair. “It’s really hard to do, but naturally, we are particularly excited about our Opening and Closing Night films because we have such special guests.” On March 6, the festival opens with a screening of Beneath The Helmet, a documentary directed by Oren Rosenfeld, who will be in attendance. Also at the event will be two of the soldiers featured in the film, which tells the story of IDF recruits. Israeli musician Idan Haviv will also perform before the film screens, Goldberg said.

The Closing Night reception, scheduled for March 13 at the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee’s Macintosh Road campus, will include a screening of On The Map, a work in progress by documentarian Dani Minkin, who will also attend festivities. The film tells the story of the 1977 Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team that against all predictions defeated the Russian Army Team in a special match. Two players from the team, Captain Tal Brody and Eric Minkin (a Sarasota resident), will also attend the event.

But Goldberg also feels excited about other films playing during the week. She spoke particularly highly about Besa-The Promise, a film about Albanian Muslims who rescued Jews during the Holocaust. “The tradition of protecting the guest is sacred to these Albanian Muslims,” Goldberg said

For the first time, the rest of the program will play at the Hollywood 20 in Downtown Sarasota with three matinee screenings scheduled every day. Tickets can be purchased by phone at 866-465-3995 or through a link at the Jewish Federation website, www.jfedsrq.org.

[Good Bite]  New Restaurant Alert: La Scarpetta
Kaye Warr

I love restaurants that are tucked away in unlikely places like strip malls. They look nondescript from the outside but the interior can reveal something unexpectedly delightful. La Scarpetta is such a place. This cozy gem of a neighborhood restaurant welcomes you in with its whimsical light fixtures (made from things like empty san Marzano tomato cans and wine bottles) and friendly service. The chef walks around chatting with the guests making food and wine recommendations and answering questions. Everyone at our group immediately thought of someone that they would want to bring here on a romantic date. The food is rustic Italian, with generous portions utilizing fresh ingredients and everything seasoned to perfection. I’m still thinking about the ‘Budino di Parmigiano,’ a warm parmesan cheese pudding with porcini mushrooms and truffle sauce. On Monday, Feb. 29, this delightful new entry to the Sarasota food scene will host a Sicilian Wine dinner showcasing an excellent wine list and delectable cuisine. Only $69 for six courses and one of those course includes stuffed sardines? I’ll race you to the reservation line.

[From The Chef]  Lime Juice and Coconut Water
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Sip your way into spring by enjoying this Hawaiian cocktail created by the mixologists at Bonefish Grill. The drink become available in restaurants Feb. 23 if you dare not try to concoct this beverage at home.

Wild Orchid Hawaiian Martini

Ingredients: 2  oz. tropical flavored rum; 0.75 oz coconut water; 0.5 oz. simple syrup; 0.25 oz. POM Wonderful; 0.5 oz. fresh squeezed lime juice; 0.75 oz. pineapple juice

Combine all the ingredients and shake until chilled. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with an orchid for some tropical flair.

Secrets to Shake it Up: Use any tropical flavored rum you like; Bonefish Grill bartenders prefer to use a coconut or a guava flavored rum.Having a party? Turn this into a fun Summer Party Punch by increasing the volume level on the ingredients, place in a large punch bowl, chill with ice and float orchids on top. Impress friends with your bartending skills by muddling some fresh pineapple instead of using pineapple juice, then garnish with a pineapple wedge on the side of the glass.
