"It just struck me how many pieces are involved when someone is transitioning."

- Dave Minton, Senior Transition Services

[Growth]  Florida Businesses Seeking to Grow

A higher percentage of Florida businesses are in need of financing for planned growth than in any state of the union besides North Carolina, according to a new study released in March by Dunn & Bradstreet and Pepperdine University. But while the study found more businesses here are optimistic for growth than in other states, 71 percent of Florida small businesses feel the current business environment is restricting growth opportunities, compared to 58 percent of the national average.

[Real Estate]  Minton Seeks to Help Seniors Transition

Even though Dave Minton has been involved in real estate for more than 15 years, it was still a challenge to navigate moving his mother into a senior living facility a couple years ago. Selling a condominum. Finding a new home for her car. Figuring out what furniture to keep and what to dispose of. Updating a will. The list goes on. “The family was stressed out, figuring how to do this or to do that,” he recalls. But he also bumped into other families dealing with similar problems, and the experience ultimately gave him an idea for a new real estate business model. “It just struck me how many pieces are involved when someone is transitioning," he said.

Now Minton has helped launch Senior Transition Services, a boutique approach to real estate especially geared for moves made late in life. The idea is to coordinate a variety of services necessary for late-in-life moves, or even for families that have lost a loved one and need to deal with an estate. “Doing a lot of research, I found different pieces of this process are bundled, but never starting with real estate,” Minton said. Senior Transition Services formally launched last month as a division of ONE Sarasota Realty Group, with Minton in charge of the effort. Minton will help clients with his growing network of attorneys, accountants, movers and other professionals. He has appraisers on call and movers who can do cross-town or cross-country hauls. He even has a list of contractors to handle home repair matters that may come up unexpectedly. “It’s so both the senior and their family have one source of contact to take care of all that is involved in a transition,” he said.

This is a return to the industry for Minton, who entered real estate in Sarasota in 2000, but decided during the housing market collapse to go to Napa and Sonoma in California to work as a wine educator. He did return to Sarasota as a full-time resident two years ago to do events and consultations as a wine consigliere, but now wants to return to his passion for real estate. Well known in this region—he was previously chairman of the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance and he founded the Suncoast Wine Festival—he thought this market would be a good one for the sort of senior-focused service he wanted to do.

As this particular offering of services is new, Minton said he will still be fine-tuning the offerings, but he has found the work to be especially rewarding. “This is pretty special when you helping seniors and their families as well,” he said.

[Film]  Sarasota Investors Bring 'Other People' to Screen
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

The audience for Other People gushed at a screening of the film on Opening Night of the Sarasota Film Festival, but Producer Sam Bisbee said the film a couple years ago seemed doomed to never be made. “It seemed like everyday, there was some crisis,” he said. But Sarasota investors in the film helped carry the project through the hard times, so it was exciting to bring the film back to Southwest Florida.

“This is very much a Sarasota product,” Bisbee told SRQ. “Two people from Sarasota helped us put this project out together. Every film requires someone to take a risk, to think it’s beautiful and love it.” And after the screening finished, Bisbee sat with those investors, Skip Sack and Franklin Carson, to celebrate the film’s ultimate success.

Carson, who has known Bisbee for years, knew from the moment he read the script that this project was worth the investment and the wait. “I just fell in love with it,” he said. “It was an incredible story and had an incredible cast.” Even during the period when the movie seemed lost in development, Carson felt a business intuition that this story would have an audience, and knew it had the emotional pull to hold viewers.

Sack’s investment was largely thanks to trust in Bisbee, whom he met at a President’s Dinner at the Sarasota Film Festival five years ago. Since that time, he has made four films with Bisbee. “Sam has a business model that takes the risk out,” he said. Bisbee, for what it’s worth, wishes that were completely true, but said having the trust of investors makes filmmaking easier.

Sack was awarded a Hometown Hero award by the Sarasota Film Festival during the Opening Night festivities for his investment in Other People. And this film already has found success. After a warm reception at Sundance, Netflix acquired Other People for distribution.
