"This will benefit our students because lifelong learners like to learn in a social setting, and they benefit greatly from interaction with one another."

- Janna Overstreet, Ringling College Lifelong Learning Academy

[Merger]  Pierian to Join with Ringling Lifelong Learning
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

The future of lifelong learning in Sarasota will be under the Ringling College of Art and Design umbrella. Months after announcing that the Lifelong Learning Academy would become a department of the private college as soon as June, officials on Monday announced the Pierian Spring Academy would also merge with the college in June 2017. “We will be bringing all of our faculty into one place and increasing our breadth and diversity of classes,” said Janna Overstreet, who will direct lifelong learning at Ringling’s south campus. “This will benefit our students because lifelong learners like to learn in a social setting, and they benefit greatly from interaction with one another.”

Overstreet, right now executive director of the Lifelong Learning Academy, said the merger of the institutions together will greatly reduce costs of marketing and administration and allow other pooled resources to be focused on education. Both Pierian and LLA serve populations of adult learners who continue going to classes later in life “just for the pure joy of it.” As opposed to vocational adult learning that typically focuses on professional advancement and certification, the curriculum gets drawn around academic curiosity and student demand. LLA, according to Overstreet, relies on about 400 volunteers to help in the academy’s operations and had around 6,000 registrations for classes this year.

Ringing College President Larry Thompson said the umbrella of the Sarasota college makes sense for all involved. “The combining of these organizations under Ringling College and creation of a new entity, the Ringling College Lifelong Learning Academy, enables us to be comprehensive and flexible,” he said. “We are not tied to one way of doing things, but we welcome creative ideas and discussions about how to bring our communities and courses together for the benefit of all of our studentsyoung and old.”

The combined academy will operate primarily in the old Sarasota High School building on US 41, the same structure that will house the Sarasota Museum of Art.

“Ringling College Lifelong Learning Academy, the product of the merger of successful independent programs, will be strong, vibrant and serve our community well,” said Pierian President Janis Cohen. And former Pierian President Dan Idzik, who served during much of the merger negotiation, said the move would improve the resources available to students and faculty at the institution.”

[Daily Shop]  Something to Write Home About
Aviel Kanter

Tucked away on the outskirts of Gulf Gate lies an oasis. From the moment you pass over the threshold, you can tell Able + Willing Supply Co. is something special. Not just because you can find brands unavailable anywhere else in the area like P.F. Candle Co. and Taylor Stitch. Not just because they are a clothing-store-cum-coffee-lounge, brewing up fresh roasted artisan beans for customers to sip on while idling on the buttery leather sofa. But instead because every product in the store is carefully curated to reflect a commitment to socially-conscious production—and Able + Willing donates 10 percent of their profits to organizations doing world-changing work.

Public – Supply is one such organization. On a mission to provide needed materials to our country’s public schools, Public – Supply channels 25 percent of profits from every notebook sale to a teacher in a high-need classroom who will use the money to fuel a project that sparks creativity. The classic notebooks provide a creamy blank slate for jotting down a plot twist in your novel-in-progress, doodling a figure for an animated short film or penciling down a love note.

[Tuesday Tech Talk]  Mastering Your Business Blog
Pedro Perez, pedro@nuevoadvertising.com

How many times have you thought of writing a blog for your business? I’m sure the first thought is that it would be a great resource, a valuable opportunity to promote your products or services. Then it reality sinks in. “What am I going to write about?” you ask yourself. “How much time can I dedicate to getting this job done?” “What about my social networks?” How can you keep your business running and find time to add another "to do" to your list?

Here are some basics that should help.

Decide the purpose of your blog. Why are you writing one? What issues do you hope to address with your commentary? Will you be helping your clients with a problem? Sharing your unique voice or particular expertise? Announcing new products or services? Once you answer these questions, organize your posts into titles.

Research similar posts that are already available on the Internet. Will your blog add value to a similar topic? Do you have a different point of view you think can help your customers or readers? Once you determine those answers, you are ready to locate resources on other websites that may underscore your message. Sharing information from other websites in your blog can be a good way to showcase your expertise, however you want to be sure that doing so will not take readers away from your content.

The best way to provide readers linked content while ensuring your site remains readily available is to set up additional link using the “open link in new window” feature. This will open links you set in a second window, leaving your website open for readers to easily come back to. This way, your readers can follow the link without officially leaving your site.
