[Theater]  FST Announces Summer Seasons
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

Though the off-season looms, Florida Studio Theatre shows no sign of slowing, announcing this week a slate of shows through the summer months for both the main stages and the cabaret. The Summer Mainstage Season runs from June 2 through August 20 and comprises three productions, including a Burt Bacharach musical, a regional premiere and a world premiere, in the Keating and Gompertz theaters. The Summer Cabaret Season sports its own three musical productions, ranging from rock and soul to bluegrass and swing, and runs from June 15 through September 24.

The Mainstage Season kicks off June 2 with the opening of Burt & Me, a coming of age “jukebox musical” about high school sweethearts reuniting after college and the lengths one will go to for romance. Featuring music and lyrics by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, FST’s Jason Cannon directs. The season continues July 5 with the regional premiere of the award-winning dramatic mystery The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey. FST Company Member Jeffrey Plunkett stars as a detective investigating a small-town disappearance, as well as more than a dozen other town residents, in a marathon performance that has him doing an hour of cardio every day to prepare. Closing out the season is the National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere of Doublewide, opening August 2. The heartfelt but hilarious story of a blue collar father’s ambition to leave his daughter a house to inherit instead of the family doublewide trailer, Cannon returns to direct this tale about the modest side of the American Dream.

In the Court Cabaret, the Summer Cabaret Season opens June 15 with The Jersey Tenors. Hailing from the Garden State, the four tenors take the audience through a whirlwind rock/opera mash-up including everything from Frank Sinatra and The Four Seasons to Queen and Bruce Springsteen. Opening July 18, the cabaret takes a turn for the bluegrass with The Blue-Eyed Bettys. Featuring Daniel Emond on banjo, Sarah Hund on fiddle and Ben Mackel on guitar, the troubadours meld music and storytelling with wicked three-part harmonies. For the final show of the season, Roar: The Music of the Jazz Age opens August 22 with Carole Bufford transporting audiences back to the Roaring Twenties with music from Bessie Smith, Louis Armstrong, Ruth Etting and more.

“We produce quality theatre programming in the summer because it is our mission to make theatre accessible and affordable to as many people as possible,” says FST Producing Artistic Director Richard Hopkins. “This particularly includes ‘locals,’—the year-round residents. FST is here to serve all the people of Sarasota all the time.”

Tickets are on sale for all shows and range from $36—39 for single tickets or $39 for a season subscription.

[Good Bite]  A Cannoli By Any Other Name
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

Everyone knows that Clemenza loves a good cannoli, and since 1972 the dessert has become synonymous in pop culture with Italian sensibilities, but food historians now disagree on just how strictly Italian the cannoli is. Tracing its origins back to the Carnevales of 9th century Sicily, this classic dessert (and rather overt fertility symbol) could actually owe its creation to the Saracens, who introduced cane sugar to Europe and ruled the entirety of Sicily by the beginning of the 10th century. And cannolis were once known as cappelli di turchi, or “Turkish hats,” so the argument goes. Regardless, the decadent pastry survived the test of time, and at Mozzarella Fella on Main Street it’s all about the flavor. Bringing in cannoli shells from New Jersey, the little morsels are filled with dry ricotta, also called ricotta impastata, mixed with sugar, milk, vanilla and cinnamon, with a handful of chocolate chips for texture. All cannolis are stuffed to order, instead of lying around waiting to be chosen, meaning no soggy or floppy pastries. Be sure to stop in around Thanksgiving for a seasonal pumpkin version.

[Recognition]  Goodwill Recognizes Ambassadors and Volunteers

In recognition of April as National Volunteer Month and as a prelude to the upcoming Goodwill Week observance May 7–13, Goodwill Manasota held its fifth annual Ambassador Recognition Luncheon this past week. This event recognizes those who make a commitment to share the mission of Goodwill with the greater community by volunteering at events, speaking on the organization's behalf, creating new fundraisers, and introducing their friends, family, and colleagues to Goodwill. A crowd of more than 250 watched as nearly 50 awards were given, honoring individuals, local businesses, nonprofits, and vendors who go over and above in service to the organization. The event opened with the emcee, Goodwill vice president Veronica Brandon Miller, acknowledging the sponsor of the event, Bouchard Insurance. To celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Ambassador Program, a number of individuals and companies were honored with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. Honorees were: bronze, Adams & Reese LLP; silver, Fred Lopez; gold, Children’s World, Ben Knisely, and Mary LeMay, and, for the first time, three Youth Ambassadors were recognized: Faith Holliday, Brianna Moss and Drew Taylor. Receiving the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award was Jo Rita Stevens for her 10,000 hours of volunteer service to Goodwill. The big award winner was Stella McDaniel, who received the Volunteer of the Year award. Over the past five and a half years, the Goodwill Ambassador program has attracted nearly 1,500 participants and grown into a successful partnership that connects volunteers to the philanthropic community.

[Recognition]  Children First Dedicates Maxheim Library

Children First recently honored philanthropists John and Elenor Maxheim with the naming of the John & Elenor Maxheim Library at the organization's Dr. Elaine Marieb Early Learning Center in Newtown. The Maxheims have been supporters of Children First in numerous ways over the past seven years. Elenor has served on the board of directors and was co-chair of the $3.8 million Raise Your Hand Campaign, a recent initiative to enhance and expand programs serving at-risk children and families. In combining their contributions of time and advocacy with financial support, the Maxheims have assisted many families in crisis. From helping a homeless family have a place to call their own, to providing a car for a mother in need of safe transportation, this couple's impact has been tremendous. After also making a significant gift to the Raise Your Hand Campaign, Children First leaders recognized the Maxheims with the naming of the library.
