Friday Weekend Edition

"It's exciting because it's a fresh start and a chance to do something a little different."

[Gallery]  Dabbert Gallery Opens New Show, Announces Move
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

The first Friday of the month has arrived and with it a new exhibition from Dabbert Gallery. Entitled Summer Showcase, the exhibit highlights gallery mainstays such as Robert Baxter and Barbara Krupp alongside works from some of the gallery’s newest member artists like Victoria Mayol and Peter Esdaile. Summer Showcase will also be one of Dabbert Gallery’s final shows in the present location on Palm Ave., as the gallery has announced it will relocate, come August, just down the block to new lodgings.

Opening tonight with a reception at 6pm—and in light of the incoming move—Summer Showcase almost feels like a celebration, with six sculptors, 20 painters and more contributing. Soothing and atmospheric oils by Dabbert regular Bill Farnsworth and sweeping, fantastical landscapes from local favorite James Griffin remind viewers of the respected name Dabbert Gallery has built and maintained at its current location, while Mayol’s dreamlike compositions and Esdaile’s endlessly interpretive and myth-inspired contributions highlight the group’s growing diversity. A seeming microcosm of the whole thing, Krupp, who has long wowed buyers near and far with her signature style, unveils more from her latest series and a stark departure from previous work.

The exhibit, which also features work from William Suys, Yuqi Wang and William Jerdon, runs through September 30, during which time Dabbert Gallery will make its move from the current location at 76 South Palm Ave. down the street to 46 South Palm Ave., where Hodgell Gallery sits presently. The move will garner an additional 400 square feet for the gallery, which David Dabbert, who owns and operates Dabbert Gallery with wife Patricia, looks forward to working with. The final measurements haven’t been made, but he estimates a roughly 35 percent increase in usable space. “And we can display that much more artwork,” he says.

The new location also brings a contemporary feel with white walls, tiled floors and more open space, though Dabbert says plans are still formulating regarding how much to keep and how much to revamp. “It’s exciting because it’s a fresh start and a chance to do something a little different,” says Dabbert. “But it’s going to be a lot of work.”

A spokesperson from Hodgell Gallery regarding the future of the glass gallery was not available for comment.

[Good Bite]  Mighty Murfin Burger Time
Shelby Schwartz, shelbys@srqme.com

Michael’s On East has cooked up a burger beyond the ordinary beef patty and cheese. Instead, they have devised a healthy blended creation, marrying meat with mushrooms in the Mighty Murf Burger, named after Michael’s On East Proprietor Michael Klauber’s father. Robust and juicy, the burger triumphantly stands, waiting for the first bite. And it is with that bite that one can taste the distinct flavors and combinations between the two tom cat brioche buns. The patty is a fusion of high plains ranch bison, chorizo and beech mushroom. This combination of mushroom and meat lowers the burger’s overall calories, fat, and sodium, providing for a healthier choice, without cutting out flavor. To compliment the blend, the patty is rubbed with porcini and topped with pan-roasted trumpet mushrooms, monterey pepper jack cheese, tomato and sweet onion relish, baby romaine and creole mayo. But what burger would be complete without fries? Not taking exception to this, truffle fries and house-made ketchup accompany the towering creation, making for a delicious and healthier burger option.

[Synergy]  Pierian Spring Academy Merges with Ringling College

As announced a year ago, Pierian Spring Academy (PSA), a nonprofit lifelong learning institution in the region, has merged with Ringling College of Art and Design as of June 1, 2017. PSA will become an integral component of the College’s newly restructured continuing studies department, where it will be incorporated into an arm of the department called the Ringling College Lifelong Learning Academy (RCLLA). These two mergers have inspired the college to take a deeper look at the structure and organization of its rapidly growing continuing studies department. Thus, the College has also announced the formation of the Ringling College School of Continuing Studies (SCS) as an umbrella department housing all of the community education programs offered by Ringling College. Under this new restructuring are two tracks for non-degree seeking students: Art & Design Studies and General Studies & Enrichment. The Pierian Spring Academy will become part of RCLLA as a component of the General Studies & Enrichment track. PSA has been offering adult learning programs in Sarasota/Manatee counties for 19 years, enrolling 1350 adult learners last year in nearly 70 seminar-style courses.
