"It's our goal as an agency, and should be our goal as a society, to help all children so they have all the tools and their brains are developed so they can become responsible, capable human beings down the line."

- Michelle Kareillian, Forty Carrots

[Philanthropy]  Nutrition and Knowledge for the Summer
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Summer vacation may be a break in the rigors of school, but it’s also a time when learning becomes a lower priority. And unfortunately, it also becomes a period when many low-income family lose access to free and reduced lunch for children. But a new partnership among several Sarasota philanthropic organizations looks to tackle early learning and summer hunger in a joined initiative.

Talking is Teaching, a pilot program launched on June 1, aims to educate parents and caregivers of the importance of talking, reading and singing to children at a young age, based on research that shows the value to brain development. The program kicked off in conjunction with All Faiths Food Bank’s Summer Hunger Program, an effort now in its fourth year aimed at providing food to low-income families during the school system’s summer break.

“The best way to help newborn to pre-K children get prepared to be educated and ready to learn to read is the simple act of talking, reading or singing to them,” says Teri Hansen, president and CEO of the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation. Her organization partnered with the food bank, Children First, Forty Carrots Family Center, Sarasota County Libraries, Sarasota County Schools and Sarasota Memorial Hospital for the effort.

Michelle Kareillian, executive director of Forty Carrots, says recent research shows a how dramatic an effect talking, reading and singing to a child can have.

“We focus on early childhood because it’s where we can make the most impact with the least amount of investment,” she says. “It’s our goal as an agency, and should be our goal as a society, to help all children so they have all the tools and their brains are developed so they can become responsible, capable human beings down the line.” She noted 90 percent of a child’s brain is developed by age 5, so the encouragement of learning at a young age, even as young as newborns, proves vital well before a child is old enough to attend school.

Sandra Franks, All Faiths Food Bank CEO, says the goal for the Summer Hunger Program this year is to help 35,000 children. Studies show as many as 40,000 children could be at risk of summer hunger in the county, she says, and as an addition to the 21,000 students on free or reduced lunch in the schools, many have younger siblings not yet enrolled. “When school ends, summer begins and hunger begins for most of these kids,” she says. Of course, the young families also would be the target audience for Talking is Teaching, so it makes sense for the education-focused program to reach the same families helped by the Summer Hunger campaign.

Hansen notes that the summer bounds of the program allow a way to measure the success of the Talking is Teaching initiative by checking on the habits of parents and caretakers at the start of summer compared to what they do when school starts again in August.

[Circus]  Bello Nock Comes Home
Shelby Schwartz, shelbys@srqme.com

In the foreground a light pole barely missing the theater rafters stands center stage. At its base, Bello Nock, with his iconic foot-high hairstyle, stands looking up at the feat before him. He shakes hands with a fellow performer, smiles at the audience and embarks on his ascent. As Nock climbs the light post, the audience sees that it also sways from side to side, adding a troubling element to an already challenging proposition. In the background his family walks the high wire and spins in a German wheel, a prop resembling a circular ladder with the performer holding onto rungs inside. Finally, Nock makes his way to the top of the light pole, waving and smiling at a crowd of dropped jaws and applause.

Coming to the Historic Asolo Theatre next week, Nock’s latest show, IncrediBello, combines traditional and innovative acts for a show custom-made to the Asolo stage and what has been a precarious year for the industry. “Circus is ever-changing and never-changing at the same time,” says Nock. Audiences expect the traditional when they go to a circus show, but they also want to be wowed with something new, and performers like Nock are pressed to deliver on both. “And that’s what we are doing this year,” he says. Nock brings the circus classics but also puts a twist on them, making the stage his own with playful humor and daredevil stunts. “Its not just circus,” he says. “It’s singing, it’s dancing—there’s magic, illusion, stunts, beauty, grace. There are historic circus arts and then there are new ideas of circus arts.”

Excited to have his show at the Historic Asolo Theatre, Nock sees it as a chance to “show people that circus is alive and well,” and in his hometown no less. A seventh-generation performer born in Sarasota, Nock’s career has often kept him traveling, but IncrediBello gives him the chance to return to where it all started. Here, he can also showcase the passing down of his craft to the eighth generation—his daughter. “Circus is really about family. Eight generations of my family have been live entertainers and it really is part of the history and culture of circus to be able to pass down what you do from father to son. It’s rare that it goes as many generations as the Nocks have,” he says. “To perform in front of the Sarasota audience is a dream come true.”

IncrediBello debuts June 13 at the Historic Asolo Theatre. Adult tickets are $15 and kids are $12.

[Daily Shop]  Embroidery with an Edge
Jasmine Respess, jasminer@srqme.com

Summer has arrived and the tank tops are a staple of the season. Although going sleeveless is a must, the piece does not have to be basic and there remains plenty of room for flair. At Molly & Zoey in St. Armand Circle, a store geared towards Millennial and Generation Z beach-dwellers, the classic top has been vamped up with the addition of embroidery. The rose, dark red and climbing from ribs to chest, borrows from traditional tattoo aesthetic—an addition that gives the light feminine shirt an edge. Easily paired with any number of items in the store, from beach-friendly accessories to more Sarasota summer staples like cut-off jeans, polarized sunglasses and wide-brim sun hats.

[Synergy]  CareerEdge Collaborates for Apprenticeship Programs

Given the high demand for skilled workers in the region, CareerEdge Funders Collaborative is partnering with educational institutions to provide short-term “express” programs in order to quickly move individuals into apprenticeship-based occupations in the trades. One such program is targeting automotive mechanics. CareerEdge is partnering with Suncoast Technical College (STC) and Gettel Automotive to recruit entry-level automotive technician trainees for jobs at the dealership’s six service centers in Sarasota and Bradenton, in combination with a special STC “express” training program. Gettel Automotive will hire individuals with no experience at $12 per hour for full or part-time trainee positions. The new hires must then attend a mandatory free 10-week training program at STC on Monday and Wednesday nights, July 17 to September 25. Once participants complete the 10-week class, they will be paid $13 per hour full time with benefits, with the potential for additional certifications and growth through the automotive apprenticeship program.  Average wages for mechanics are between $40,000 and $50,000. CareerEdge is also partnering with Manatee Technical College on express programs for plumbing and electrician certifications, and with Learning Alliance for a short-tern Broadband Technician program. The automotive technician express program is funded by CareerEdge and a donor through the Gulf Coast Community Foundation. CareerEdge is an innovative partnership of business, government, and philanthropic organizations that leverages public and private dollars to provide opportunities for better jobs and wages in Manatee and Sarasota counties.
