"Tradition and passion are our secret ingredients."

- Tina Narbona, Italian Tradition

[Food]  Narbonas Bring Italian Tradition to Sarasota
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

While Sarasotans still mourn the loss of Pomona Bistro over on North Orange Avenue, the space didn’t stay vacant very long, with the opening of Italian Tradition Restaurant and Martini Bar this month. The creation of owners Carlo and Tina Narbona, Italian Tradition combines authentic fine Italian dining with a European café-style feel all in the active environs of the up-and-coming Rosemary District. “We have been looking for a place to open our restaurant for a long time and finally found Sarasota,” say the Narbonas. “We fell in love with the city, its atmosphere and the people who live here.”

A team for nearly 30 years, the Narbonas have been honing their culinary technique in restaurants around the globe, before settling into Sarasota with a menu straight out of Italy (but with helpful translations). Start the night with an appetizer of beef Carpaccio, Saffron-seasoned mussels or creamy imported Mozzarella dressed with truffle oil and pink salt—and don’t skip the soup, made daily—before moving on to the entrée. Veal Ossobuco, beef tenderloin and sea bass fillet beckon, but one would be remiss not to consider one of Italian Tradition’s fresh homemade pastas in the lasagna, gnocchi and tagliatelle. For a pair of the Narbona’s signature dishes, try the Chef’s Lasagna, prepared with mushroom and Foie Gras, and the Gamberi e Capesante, sautéed scallops and shrimp with cheese risotto and organic vegetable.

For vegetarians and those eating gluten-free, Italian Tradition boasts several available options and an accommodating attitude towards adjustments. Vegetarians will find plenty of veggie-centric pasta dishes and appetizers (as well as the requisite salads), and gluten-free diners have free reign over all fish and meat dishes, with potato gnocchi available for pasta-lovers.

And while some specialty items are imported from Italy, the Narbonas are committed to achieving their global taste with as many local ingredients as possible. “My team and I delight in finding the most authentic Italian products, as well as the best local organic produce, to create delicious and memorable meals,” says Tina Narbona, before adding that bit that brings it all together. “Tradition and passion are our secret ingredients, and we are excited for you to taste the difference.”

Located at 481 North Orange Ave., Italian Tradition is open for lunch and dinner every day except Tuesday.

[Daily Shop]  I Whale Sarasota
Shelby Schwartz, shelbys@srqme.com

When Shep and Ian Murray grew tired of the corporate life, the brothers decided to make ties instead of wear them. Inspired by the Martha’s Vineyard lifestyle, the two started a clothing store, Vineyard Vines, embodying a coastal and casual feel. Their logo, a smiling pink whale, pays homage to a wood carving their father did on the Vineyard and reminds everybody that “every day should feel this good.” Although Vineyard Vines doesn’t open at UTC for a few months, the smiling whale can still be found locally at places like Island Pursuit, on St. Armands Circle. Offering a variety of Vineyard Vines clothing and accessories, this whale-adorned graphic t-shirt subverts the iconic, playing off the classic look with the now-beloved pink logo. Vineyard Vines uses their smiling mascot as a substitute for a heart on the long sleeve shirt, reading as “I whale Sarasota,” combining local pride with love for the brand.

[Synergy]  SNAC Awards Nursing Scholarships

The Suncoast Nursing Action Coalition (SNAC) today will award $140,000 in scholarships to 17 Suncoast nurses to help boost the number of bachelor-prepared nurses (BSN) and doctoral-prepared nursing instructors in the Sarasota, Charlotte, Manatee and Desoto counties region. Funded by community donors, the scholarships will help RNs obtain the bachelor’s and doctorate degrees needed to ensure the best care for local patients and produce more faculty nurses qualified to teach BSN programs in the region. Even though decades of research validates the link between BSN-prepared nurses and better patient outcomes and care, roughly half of all nurses graduating today are bypassing standard bachelor’s degrees and becoming licensed RNs through faster, more accessible associate degree programs to meet today’s employer needs. Nursing leaders from the four-county region joined together in this regional effort to produce a more highly educated nursing workforce across the Suncoast.

Playing guitar and singing for his band, The Grateful Dead, as well as several others, Garcia took his hippie movement from the 60's into the 90's, inspiring the following of millions of long-haired, tie-dye t-shirted, carefree "Deadheads." Musicians honoring the Dead this year will include the Michael Miller Band, Grass is Dead, and The Schmitz Brothers.  The event is held at the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center with doors opening at 4pm and music starting at 5pm.
