"If you get the chance to talk to this woman, hear what she says - your body runs over with chills."

- Charles Smith, Manatee County Commissioner

[History]  Bradenton to Trumpet Civil Rights Icon
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

A civil rights icon who worked with Martin Luther King, Jr. will share stories from moments in history with a Bradenton audience a week from today.

Dr. Xernona Clayton, a giant in activism and broadcasting, will be in town for a meet-and-greet, the screening of the biographical documentary A Life to Remember and a book signing. Manatee County Commissioner Charles Smith says it's a chance for the community to get close to a figure at the center of the civil rights struggle of the 1960s. Smith met Clayton several years ago through the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and says he was immediately amazed by Clayton’s story. “She knew the actors who have passed and left here, and can account verbatim on conversations she had with them,” Smith says. “If you get the chance to talk to this woman, hear what she says—your body runs over with chills.”

The 87-year-old Clayton for a time was the special assistant to King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, and she launched efforts to desegregate hospitals in Atlanta. She helped the family with certain funeral preparations after the famed civil rights leader’s assassination in 1968. She also famously worked with Klu Klux Klan Grand Dragon Calvin Craig when both served on a Model Cities program, and Craig would cite Clayton’s influence when he denounced the hate group in 1968. Clayton also enjoyed success in media, becoming the first black broadcaster to host a television show in the South. In the late 1970s, she joined Turner Broadcasting, where she rose to Corporate Vice President of Urban Affairs and served as a CNN executive for 31 years.

In 1993, she created the Trumpet Awards, which honor the major achievements of African Americans. It’s that awards event that led to Manatee County officials reaching out to Clayton. Elliott Falcione, executive director of the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, says that the county invited Clayton to town about a year ago in hopes of luring the awards to this region. After meeting Clayton, Falcione knew he wanted to bring her back for a community event. Plans were made for an event next Thursday at the Manatee Performing Arts Center. “At some point we can bring her back and get her in front of students and organizations to express the importance of unifying different races and cultures, and what that can bring to a community like ours,” Falcione says.

Both Smith and Falcione would still love someday to bring the Trumpet Awards to Manatee, and the event next week offers the chance to further showcase the region to Clayton.

The public event on Thursday opens at 6pm and will include a screening, with a meet-and-greet and a book signing scheduled at 7:30pm. Tickets can be reserved through the Manatee Players.

[Ryan Flies]  From the Cockpit Part 45: ELA Eclipse 10
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

Editor’s Note: This is part 45 of an ongoing series documenting the flights of active-duty US Navy Pilot Ryan Rankin on his journey to fly 52 planes in 52 weeks through the year 2017.

Not content to fly just one this year, Rankin steps behind the controls of another gyroplane this week—the ELA Eclipse 10. Partnering up once again with Chris Lord over in Sebring, FL, Rankin takes the top-shelf gyroplane out for a spin to see the sights in style.

A noticeable step up from the Cougar he flew previously, the Eclipse comes with a more powerful engine, all the creature comforts, a whole host of avionics and a souped-up streamlined look like something out of James Bond (the secret agent does fly a gyroplane in You Only Live Twice), plus a removable canopy. “It has more of a first-class feel,” says Rankin.

Feeling a bit more confident on this second excursion into the world of gyroplanes, Rankin was “definitely more comfortable,” he says. Lord performs a vertical take-off (gyroplanes don’t necessarily need a runway) and passes the controls to Rankin for a nice 30-minute jaunt through the skies. It flies like a plane, with a bit of a helicopter’s personality, and when the time is up he angles the Eclipse toward the runway for landing. He waits for Lord to take the controls, but he never does. Without a word, he leaves the task to Rankin, who performs the job with aplomb. Lord congratulates him on the ground. “That would never happen in a helicopter,” says Rankin.

When asked to choose between the Cougar and the Eclipse, Rankin doesn’t hesitate. “The Eclipse, for sure,” he says.

For more about the flight in Rankin's own words and a video of the flight, follow the link below.

[Synergy]  FSI Helps Families Leave Homelessness Behind

Six families who had lived at a Sarasota homeless shelter are now well on their way to self-sufficiency after a year’s worth of financial-literacy training, financial coaching, and peer support. The families are the second group to graduate from Gulf Coast Community Foundation and United Way Suncoast’s Financial Sustainability Initiative (FSI). Launched about a year and a half ago, FSI helps families avoid relapsing into homelessness by building the knowledge, habits, and assets they need to become financially sustainable. FSI is a new approach to ending generational poverty that was developed by Gulf Coast and United Way after scanning best practices around the country. Unlike many traditional financial-literacy programs, FSI reinforces classroom-style lessons about budgeting and saving with intensive, one-on-one financial and behavioral coaching. Incentives to help participants stick with the program range from meals and on-site childcare during evening workshops to matched savings accounts that double the money families are able to sock away. Through partners such as IberiaBank and the nonprofit Capital Good Fund, FSI also offers access to a range of asset- and credit-building financial products that effectively didn’t exist for these families in the past.

[Synergy]  Child Protection Center Receives Grant for Security

Thanks to the support of the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation, the Child Protection Center (CPC) was able to increase security for clients, volunteers and staff at the main campus in Sarasota. CPC was able to improve the security system by installing exterior and interior security cameras, and upgrading access controls of the building. Additionally, CPC was able to upgrade the iRecord system used to record forensic interviews of child victims. The previous system was out of date and no longer supported by the company. Accurate and enhanced video evidence not only helps to protect the child being interviewed from future harm, but are often used to send perpetrators to jail for their acts. The mission of CPC is the prevention, intervention and treatment of child abuse. CPC has been serving Sarasota and DeSoto Counties since 1980, and last year the organization provided services to over 63,000 individuals, including forensic interviews, prevention education workshops, supervised visits and trauma-informed therapy.

[Philanthropy]  Mote Marine Selected for Staples $50,000 Breakroom Makeover Contest

Staples Business Advantage, the business-to-business division of Staples, announced the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota, Florida as the winner of its national $50,000 breakroom makeover contest. Mote Marine Laboratory was chosen from thousands of submissions as the grand prize winner based on a creative limerick written by one of its scientists.

“The definition of a breakroom is much different today than it was a decade ago or even last year, but businesses shouldn’t overlook this important space and how it’s used,” said Neil Ringel, president, North American Delivery, Staples. “We’re looking forward to working with Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium to design and transform their space for all staff to enjoy. We’ve seen that transformations such as these not only improve productivity and collaboration, but also retention and recruitment.”

A Staples design expert will work closely with the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium to create a space that goes beyond a place to heat up lunch. Staples Business Advantage will provide the laboratory access to its solutions – including coffee options, healthy snacks, flexible office furniture, cleaning solutions, and technology products – as well as expert design and installation services.

“We’re thrilled to have won this makeover contest and we look forward to working with Staples on this transformation,” said Dr. Michael P. Crosby, President & CEO of Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium. “The staff at our nonprofit institution do amazing work, often with modest means, and they put our oceans, animals and community first. Now, thanks to Staples, we can give them something almost as special as they are. We can’t wait to see the result.”

[Jpan]  Lots of Lobster

New this past summer to JPan is the roll of all rolls. The lobster roll not only incorporates fresh, delicate pieces of sweet and juicy lobster, but is also accompanied with snow crab and conch to really set it apart. The beautiful presentation is topped off with avocado and a delectable lychee honey, making this dish a roll to be reckoned with. This eye catching plate will also not leave you hungry; presented with 10 pieces rather than the standard 8. Truly an experience, come down to both JPan locations to try the Lobster roll for yourself - a work of art and nothing like you’ve tasted before!
