[Philanthropy]  Leadership Seeks Serenity with New Garden
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

An effort by members of Leadership Sarasota aims to bring some serenity to those in need of social services. The creation of a garden at the Glasser/Schoenbaum Human Services Center could create an enduring legacy at the Sarasota campus.

“We have teams incorporating as many elements as possible,” says Sue Wetzel, who is chairing the communications team for this year’s Leadership Class. The garden was selected out of 15 prospective projects, but the impact of Hurricane Irma on the area this fall delayed efforts on the garden from beginning in earnest. Now, Wentzel says the class is raising money and moving ahead on designs.

The garden will be designed with peacefulness, collaboration and reflection in mind. Wetzel says several audiences will be served, whether it's children who want a place to play, adults who need areas for private conversation or individuals who just need a place to quietly sit in their own thoughts. Some plants will be placed in memory of patients who previously obtained services at Glasser/Schoenbaum, with the experts from Marie Selby Botanical Gardens contributing their knowledge to vegetation decisions. Wetzel says the group particularly is seeking out donations for benches that will be set in the garden, and durable benches prove to be expensive parts of this type of project.

The Glasser/Schoenbaum’s Campus of Caring houses nonprofit organizations serving low-income and at-risk individuals. About 45,00 clients, both children and adults, receive services from organizations on the campus each year. The garden is slated to open to the public in May.

“We are thrilled to have the partnership of the Chamber’s Leadership Sarasota program to enhance and improve our campus with this unique green space feature for our 16 nonprofits agencies and those they serve," says Kameron Hodgens, CEO and executive director of the Glasser/Schoenbaum Human Services Center.

The Leadership Class of 2018 includes 40 members, including many with expertise in design, engineering, landscaping, financing and planning, all useful for executing a project such as this. Wetzel says the project is the culmination of efforts this year. “We get together for one full day each month in a concentrated area of understanding and information-gathering in Sarasota,” she says. That includes media days, industry visits and government explorations. And each year, it involves a public undertaking intended to make a positive contribution that may not be quantitatively measured but qualitatively experienced, which is the aim of the garden.

Leadership Sarasota is a project of The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce.

[Education]  Riverview High Implements IB Excellence and Equity Initiative

Riverview High School has been selected to participate in the International Baccalaureate Excellence and Equity Initiative (E2), a new national program created to promote the inclusion and success of under-represented students in the IB Diploma and Career-related programs, known as DP and CP. Over the next two years, secondary school leaders and faculty will work to remove barriers to DP or CP participation for under-represented students, create pathways to the DP or CP and incorporate strategies that are designed to positively impact the success of under-represented students enrolled in the programs. The goal is to empower more students to graduate with the skills and tools needed for post-secondary education and lifelong learning. Research indicates that less than 1 percent of diverse schools nationwide have advanced programs in which their students reflect the diversity of the overall school population. Research has also shown that the DP and CP programs can empower under-represented groups for college entrance, persistence and success. One of the most compelling studies found that IB Diploma candidates in Chicago Public Schools — low income, minority, first generation college-goers — have not internalized the negative stereotype effect of similar non-IB students. [Expansion]  Florida Studio Theatre Dedicates Kretzmer Artist Housing Project

This December, Florida Studio Theatre held the official dedication for the opening of the Kretzmer Artist Housing Project located on Cohen Way in the growing Rosemary District. These five new townhomes help to fill the pressing need for quality housing that is safe, accessible and within close proximity to downtown. After breaking ground on the project back in October of 2016, the structure was completed just one year later in November of 2017. Along with Florida Studio Theatre’s tremendous growth in programming over the last 5 years, comes the growth of the artistic company and staff. FST currently houses over 100 guest artists and interns a year. These new townhomes include 20 bedrooms for visiting artists and young theatre professionals participating in the educational internship program. Project supporters, FST artists, Board members and FST staff all gathered to celebrate the completion of this new artistic home. Ernie Kretzmer, in loving memory of Alisa Kretzmer, contributed the lead gift to this new artist housing.

[Opening]  Gonzmart Restaurants Announces The Buccaneer on Longboat Key

The Gonzmart Family of Restaurants (aka Columbia Restaurant Group) will open a new restaurant, The Buccaneer, in 2019 on the site of the former PattiGeorge’s on Longboat Key. The Buccaneer name is a nod to Longboat Key’s culinary past, particularly Herb Field’s The Buccaneer Inn, opened in 1957. In its prime, the fine dining restaurant was a fixture on Holiday magazine’s national list of the best U.S. and international restaurants. The new Buccaneer Restaurant site at 4120 Gulf of Mexico Drive has its own history as PattiGeorge’s, the 40-year-old landmark. The building will be torn down, and Gonzmart has been working with architects on exterior and interior design ideas for the restaurant, which will still have boat slips. On travels around the world, he acquired antiques and artifacts from the “golden age” of the buccaneers for use in the new restaurant. Gonzmart also announced Executive Chef Mark Boor, who was hired specifically for The Buccaneer. Boor worked at the Trio Bistro in Cincinnati when it was named a Top 20 restaurant, and at Fulton’s Crab House in Disney Springs. He was selected as one of the “Top 20 Chefs of Central Florida” by Restaurant Forum magazine. No opening date has been announced.
