"There was no one to tell us about the town we now live in."

- Rob Thierfielder, Sarasota Walking Tours

[History]  Sarasota Walking Tours Celebrate History on the Go
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

Rob Thierfielder loves to travel. A visitor to more than 35 countries around the globe, he hops from place to place, exploring and soaking up the history. And like any traveler, Thierfielder has his rituals. “Everywhere I’ve been,” he says, “I go on a walking tour to learn about the city.” But coming down to Sarasota, Thierfielder was “blown away,” not just by the amount of history and arts and culture to be explored, but that the arts and culture capital of the Gulf Coast had no walking tour to call its own and trumpet its story. “There was no one to tell us about the town we now live in,” he says. So Thierfielder made his own—Sarasota Walking Tours.

A native of New Jersey, it may seem odd for Thierfielder to take it upon himself to tell Sarasota’s story, but the man’s a professional. A certified international tour manager, Thierfielder has led tours through New England, parts of Canada, Denver, Vegas and some of the most celebrated national parks in the United States, including Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce Canyon. Now working with Visit Sarasota, he unveiled his Sarasota tour for test runs in December and they now run at least thrice weekly.

Tours begin by the Unconditional Surrender statue on the Bayfront, with Thierfielder laying out the history of the keys and the naming of Sarasota. Walking along the Bayfront, conversation turns to growth of the city and landing of Scottish colonists in 1885 (which helps explain Thierfielder’s kilt, though just a bit). Walking through Five Points—a downtown hub since 1885—Thierfielder lets participants in on the original design behind the convergence, before stopping in the Selby Library for a brief rest stop and a gander at the 3,200-gallon aquarium housed within.

Explore the theater district and the history of the Keating Building, now home to Florida Studio Theatre, and peek inside the Church of the Redeemer where original stained glass windows remain and Thierfielder recounts the story behind the church bells, sent all the way from Germany. The real estate boom of the 1920s, the Sarasota Opera House, the history of Palm Avenue—all get a moment in the sun. Stopping at the soon-to-be-open Art Ovation Hotel, Thierfielder muses on stories yet to come. “Sarasota has a very interesting past,” he says, “starting with the Calusa Indian, all the way up to this new future that hasn’t been built yet.”

Tickets for Sarasota Walking Tours are $30 per person, with tours scheduled for every Friday and Saturday at 11am and Sundays at 1pm. Off-hour tours and private tours are available upon request, so no one has to miss out on history. “All they have to do is call me,” says Thierfielder.

[TODAY]  THEATER: Rhinoceros , February 7 – April 14

A biting absurdist satire from Eugene Ionesco, a seemingly normal man wakes up, goes to work, drinks too much and flirts with his coworker, when normalcy is shattered by the thundering arrival of a full-grown rhinoceros. As the townsfolk transform into horned beasts around him, this man must contemplate the temptation and tragedy of following the herd. Directed by the Tony Award-winning Frank Galati.

Asolo Repertory Theatre, 5555 North Tamiami Trl., Sarasota

[TODAY]  THEATER: Shakespeare's Greatest Hits , February 7 – June 10, Varies by day

"Brush Up Your Shakespeare" with the best of the Bard. This tongue-in-cheek musical revue is a collection of songs inspired by the world's greatest playwright. From relevant to irreverent, from soulful to sinful, from "Get Thee To A Nunnery" and "Othello's Rap" to "What A Pieve of Work is Man" and "Tonight."

Florida Studio Theatre, 1241 N. Palm Ave., Sarasota

[SOON]  GALLERY: OPENING RECEPTION Heather Hutchison: Forever Changes , February 8, 5:30pm

This exhibition highlights Hutchison's trademark style, "more akin to the simplified beauty of James Turrell than the stark face of minimalism." (NY Arts Magazine) The comparison is important for anyone who has only experienced Hutchison’s art in reproductions. Viewers will see thin sheets of Plexiglas mounted on frames of birch plywood, their surfaces masked in duck tape or coated in beeswax. Moving closer-viewers are entranced by the rows of saturated color, glowing, inviting them to look, not at the artwork, but through it.

Alfstad& Contemporary, 1419 5th St., Sarasota.

[SOON]  THEATER: Shirley Valentine , February 8 – February 18, 8pm

Shirley Valentine is a one-character play by Willy Russell. Taking the form of a monologue by a middle-aged, working-class Liverpool housewife, it focuses on her life before and after a transforming holiday abroad.

The Players Centre of Performing Arts, 838 North Tamiami Tr., Sarasota.

[SOON]  MUSIC: Trout , February 8 – February 11

There are few chamber pieces as famous as Schubert's brilliant Trout Quintet. This infectious piece gushes with bubbly optimism and uncomplicated joy. The viola finally gets to shine in Bowen's Fantasia. The work ranges from the instrument's dark chocolatey tones to its expressive high notes. An energetic work, Penn's Capriccio for Tuba and Marimba perfectly pairs agile and percussive strokes on the marimba with the lyrical tones of the Tuba.

Holley Hall, Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center, 709 North Tamiami Tr., Sarasota.

[SOON]  GALLERY: Expanse: Linda Richichi , February 9 – February 20

Expanse is an in-depth look into the newest oil paintings of Richichi's. The exhibition will feature her plein air paintings of Sarasota's most awe inspiring spaces. Richichi's works draw from the energy, color and spirit of the landscape. While remaining representative, these works are abstracted and the focuses shifts to her brilliant eye for color, playful brushstrokes and texture from the palette knife.

530 Burns Gallery, 530 Burns Ct., Sarasota.
