"It's time residents, boaters and businesses all work together on this challenge and opportunity."

[Government]  FDEP Approves Lido Renourishment
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

State officials on Tuesday granted final approval on a shoreline restoration project at Lido Beach, effectively closing a chapter on a long fight about saving one beach in part by dredging a pass by Siesta Key.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection issued a final order to grant a joint coastal permit, allowing the Army Corps of Engineers to move ahead on a long-term restoration project. The permit allows the use of 1.3 million cubic yards of sand from Big Pass to be used to renourish Lido Beach. That’s about 400,000 fewer cubic yards of sand than originally planned; a more modest amount was approved by Administrative Law Judge Bram Canter. A group of petitioners from Siesta Key had filed a lawsuit against the City of Sarasota, the Army Corps and other parties to stop the project.

Sarasota City Manager Tom Barwin urged petitioners not to appeal and to let the project move forward now, promising the city would closely monitor Big Pass to see if the dredging resulted in ecological harm. “I remind all this permit requires unprecedented monitoring and future adjustments as warranted. Significant resources—$2.5 million—also have been set aside to address any unforeseen effects,” Barwin says. “While we do not expect to use those funds, it serves as an insurance policy of sorts. It’s time residents, boaters and businesses all work together on this challenge and opportunity.”

Petitioners declined to comment specifically to the decision but said a strategy is in process to protect Siesta Key.

City spokeswoman Jan Thornburg said the federal agency will cover 62 percent of the $22-million renourishment project. The rest of the funding will be split between the state and city. She stressed both Lido and Siesta Key beaches remain open to the public.

[Community Foundation]  Sailing to New Horizons
Brittany Mattie, brittany.mattie@srqme.com

Making waves and spreading positive impact from sea to land, The Sarasota Yacht Club recently partnered with The Community Foundation of Sarasota County to create a charitable arm of their membership called SYC Cares. This newly established initiative is just under a year old and helming a strong mission to position Sarasota Yacht Club as a positive community entity and resource to local nonprofits. SYC Cares was formed because the Board, including Membership Director Stephania Feltz and Commodore Jane Hutchins, believe their members want to be doing even more and giving back even more. The Distinguished Elite Club has been locally involved since its inception and is recognized as having the most engaged membership in Sarasota, but by heading down this philanthropic route, they’ll be able to infuse more than $100,000 back into the community each year through their collective giving in collaboration with the Community Foundation.

Additionally, it is providing yet another incentive for members to join together and make their membership matter. By uniting together for a greater good, the opportunity then arises, to build deeper bonds with fellow members and create an even stronger impact. They even share members’ philanthropic passions via the ‘Why I Give’ profile series in its monthly publication of Spars & Tacks. With over 700 memberships at the club, SYC Cares continues to focus on creating meaningful involvement and connecting members with each other and the community through education sessions, tour opportunities, strategic grant making and volunteering.

SYC proudly selected the Boys & Girls Club of Sarasota County as their first partner—believing that the Boys & Girls Club inspires its young members through quality educational programming to instill the same level of commitment to community. In April, SYC Cares hosted its inaugural Caring & Sharing event, where a portion of the proceeds benefited the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County. The event welcomed more than 150 of their members and featured a cocktail hour, a silent auction, port wine raffle and a live auction. In May, SYC members presented to the Boys & Girls Club a $15,322 check raised from the event to fund the Technology Station and Wall Mural in the agency’s new, state-of-the-art space for teens. This is just one of the many democratic philanthropy work they’ve managed to accomplish in a year’s time. With an exciting growth continuing to procure internally amongst members, SYC Cares has been able to reach more nonprofits with greater bandwidth. "We are incredibly proud and energized by what we have achieved so far, and it is only the beginning!" says Co-Chair Kimberly Bleach. All aboard the caring and sharing vessel—SYC Cares is going the distance and anchoring at broader horizons.

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County is proud to partner with SRQ Media Group to highlight stories about community impact powered by philanthropy in our region, thanks to the support of donors and our local nonprofit partners. The Community Foundation is a public charity founded in 1979 by the Southwest Florida Estate Planning Council as a resource for caring individuals and the causes they support, enabling them to make a charitable impact on the community.

[SB2 Transformative Philanthropy ]  Meet Our Keynote Speaker, Julie Henry

Get to know our Transformative Philanthropy Keynote Speaker, Julie Henry. A skilled facilitator, consultant and dynamic keynote speaker, Julie brings 20 years of experience to her global clients through Finish Line Leadership - a company dedicated to helping leaders influence change and make it stick. She knows what it takes to get across the finish line, both personally and professionally, and values embracing the inevitable change and challenges faced along the way.

Why is it important for nonprofits to embrace a culture of change?

Change is a natural component of any healthy organization. It is necessary to stay relevant, innovative, recruit the 'right' people, and for nonprofits especially, make the impact you want to have on the world. If this perspective is built into the organization's culture, it can thrive. If not, it will quickly find itself struggling and may not realize that the problem is rooted in a culture unreceptive to change.

Have you found it difficult for nonprofits to embrace change, or as you say, “make it stick?” Why is that?

In my experience, the most challenging aspect is related to big picture, strategic change. The minute the proposed change feels like it could affect the organization’s mission, people react out of loyalty and strict allegiance because it feels scary and new. Nonprofits have a wide range of stakeholders invested in their success therefore, ensuring each group has buy-in during the process can be challenging. However, this is key in making sure the time, money and energy invested in visionary change results in
