"It was not my intent to deceive or mislead anyone. I made a mistake in saying that I completed my degree. What I did was wrong and set a bad example for someone seeking public service. "

- Melissa Howard, state House candidate

[Politics]  Howard Apologizes for Fake Degree, But Stays in Race

Melissa Howard, a state House candidate running in District 73, has issued an apology after posting a picture of an apparently fake college degree.

"I would like to apologize to my family and my supporters for this situation," Howard posted on Facebook. "It was not my intent to deceive or mislead anyone. I made a mistake in saying that I completed my degree. What I did was wrong and set a bad example for someone seeking public service. I am staying in the race and intend to win and lead by example from now on."

Howard flew to Ohio last week to prove she graduated from Miami University, and even posted a picture online of her with a 1996 college degree mounted and framed in her mother's house.

But university officials quickly said the degree did not appear to be authentic. Howard's campaign initially disputed the story as "fake news." The apology makes clear, however, that Howard did not finish her degree when she attended the university.

Howard is running against Tommy Gregory in the Aug. 28 Republican primary. The winner faces Democrat Liv Coleman in a Nov. 6 general election.

Gregory, a Sarasota attorney and former JAG lawyer, says Howard’s choice to stay in the race showed poor character. “Melissa Howard has lied, broken the law, and been caught red-handed,” he said. “In the military, she would be discharged dishonorably. Yet instead of withdrawing gracefully, she is doubling down on her deceit even to the detriment of other Republicans. I will be making my case that I have the courage and integrity to fight the establishment and clean up the sort of corrupt behavior represented by Melissa Howard."

Coleman, a University of Tampa professor, says lying about one’s academic credentials is something voters should take seriously. “It’s so important that our representatives are role models of honesty and integrity, and that includes how we choose to represent our educational credentials,” she says. “I offer a strong alternative to what we’ve seen the last few days and I look forward to the general election contest in November because I know voters will want someone who will stand up for the values that they share.”

[Flight]  Cleveland Route Means Frontiers Arrival at SRQ
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Another ultra-low-cost carrier will soon open a counter at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. Frontier Airlines just announced nonstop service between SRQ airport and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport starting on Dec. 21. “This announcement brings the first nonstop service to CLE from SRQ in over a decade and we are confident that it will be a great success,” said Rick Piccolo, airport president and CEO.

Twice weekly flights on Mondays and Fridays start Dec. 10, with one-way fare running as low as $49.

Frontier executives announced the flights during a ceremony in Cleveland on Monday, along with other flights to the Ohio city. “With this winter's schedule, we will offer a great range of warm-weather destinations to customers from Cleveland,” Frontier Senior Vice President Daniel Shurz told Cleveland.com.

It’s the first connection from CLE direct to SRQ since 2008, but the big news locally may be the carrier’s arrival as much as the route itself. Piccolo notes Frontier is one of the top three ultra-low-cost carriers in the country, along with Allegiant Air and Spirit Airlines. Allegiant just started service from SRQ in April. “It’s bringing us a whole new group of travelers we haven’t enjoyed before,” Piccolo says, “which is certainly a help for us.”

Now that Frontier has a desk in Sarasota, more destinations may follow from the airline, which last November announced a major expansion over the next decade and has 200 aircraft on order.

SRQ airport this year has enjoyed steady growth in traffic so far, Piccolo says. The facility saw 16-percent passenger growth in May, 23-percent growth in June and 30-percent growth in July.

[Government]  Early Voting Scheduled for August 28 Primary Election

Early voting for the August 28 primary election will begin on Saturday, August 18 and continue through Saturday, August 25, from 8:30am to 4:30pm daily, Sarasota County Supervisor of Elections Ron Turner has announced. During the early voting period, voters may cast their ballots at any one of the three supervisor of elections offices in Sarasota (2001 Adams Lane), Venice (4000 Tamiami Trail S.), and North Port (13640 Tamiami Trail), at the Westfield Sarasota Square Mall (8201 S. Tamiami Trail), or at the North Sarasota Library (2801 Newtown Boulevard). Florida Law requires voters to present a current and valid photo and signature ID prior to voting. A voter who appears at a polling location without photo and signature ID will be allowed to vote a provisional ballot. During this primary election, every registered voter may vote. However, political party affiliation will affect which races and candidates appear on ballots. Florida has closed primaries, which means that voters must be registered with a political party in order to vote in a party's primary election. All registered voters, whether affiliated with a political party or not, can vote on issues and nonpartisan candidates, such as for school board and judicial offices, in a primary election. To confirm their party affiliation, voters may visit the website below.
