Friday Weekend Edition

"Anything is possible when you truly believe. Anything is possible when you begin to see the power in you."

- Nate Jacobs, Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe

[Theater]  Nate Jacobs and WBTT Subject of WEDU Documentary
Philip Lederer, Phil.Lederer@srqme.com

Audiences and friends of Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe might see a few more props and personnel moving about the theater if they visit in coming months, as WBTT and its founder and artistic director, Nate Jacobs, have become the subject of a new documentary project from WEDU PBS. Filming has already begun, and the documentary is scheduled to premiere December 2019.

Over the course of the next three to four months, the documentary crew will delve deep into the story behind WBTT, which next year celebrates 20 years exploring the African-American experience on stage. Conducting interviews with administration, performers and supporters will give the crew a feel for the community, and chronicling September’s Aretha Franklin tribute, Salute to the Queen, will afford a firsthand experience of the power of WBTT’s performance, but with filming beginning this past Sunday, it’s already clear that a big part of the story will be Jacobs himself, his path to WBTT and his struggle to keep that purpose alive.

A self-described “laidback little Southern guy from Florida who never thought he could make an impact on anything,” Jacobs now finds himself the heart and soul of a community institution he spearheaded through thick and thin—mostly thin—and seems to still wonder at the transformation. At one point, he was going to be a fine artist. Later, he had offers to act in New York City. Friends questioned his financial future, staying with a theater that couldn’t afford to pay a salary. “It only brought me self-satisfaction,” says Jacobs of his decision to keep building the theater he founded, “knowing that I was on my path, and I was on my journey. And I had to be content with that and be purpose-minded.”

That doesn’t mean it was easy. “I was a starving artist,” says Jacobs, who hit the pavement every season for more than a decade to find venues and raise money for costumes. “Recreating my world every year to try to be able to produce plays,” he says. “It called for every bit of me.” Now, with a theater complex and a salary and a community reputation for quality performance, Jacobs has time to look back. “It was a bare-bones, block-by-block, purpose and passion-driven journey,” he says.

[Government]  Bayfront Plan to Land Before City Commission Thursday
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

Sarasota City Commissioners will hold a special meeting next Thursday to hear a presentation of the Bay’s Final Master Plan. The board is expected to vote on a plan for the entire 53-acre Bayfront site’s conceptual design and to discuss and approve an implementation plan for the first phase of the project, which will involve 10 acres on the south end.

Commissioners are expected to authorize city staff to work with the Sarasota Bayfront Planning Organization on an interim agreement regarding The Bay project.

Representatives of the Van Wezel Foundation and Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall will also be on hand to discuss a plan to develop a new performing arts center on the site. Staff plans to work with those boards on an agreement to bring back in six months that outlines planning, development, financing, governance and operation of the new venue.

The SBPO has recommended commissioners approve an interagency agreement between the city and a newly formed organization, tentatively titled The Bay Conservancy, for fundraising, implementation, governance and management of the park property.

The special meeting is scheduled for Sept. 6 from 5-8pm.

[Government]  "No Swim" Advisory Lifted for Longboat Key Beach

The "No Swim" advisory issued Thursday, August 23, for Longboat Key Beach has been lifted. Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County officials received testing results yesterday that were at a satisfactory level, meeting both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state recreational water standards. Residents and visitors may return to swimming and other water sports at this beach site. The "No Swim" advisory signage will be removed; however, Red Tide advisory signage for the Karenia brevis algae bloom currently off the coastline will remain in place until conditions improve. The Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County monitors water quality weekly at 16 sites along Sarasota's 34 miles of beaches. The intent of this program is to provide county residents and visitors with accurate, up-to-date information on the water quality at our beaches. The Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County expects to have the next round of test results available on Wednesday, Sept. 5. Check the latest beach conditions at the website below.

[Business]  Ryntal Property Management Celebrates 10 Years

Ryntal Property Management, a leader in residential property management, has announced it has achieved a major milestone: 10 years of successful business operations.  Tom and Kathy Wagenhauser have grown the business from three properties and one employee to managing over 650 properties and 30 employees. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only about 30% of all small businesses ever reach the 10-year mark. And while it's an accomplishment for any company to reach the 10-year milestone, it's particularly significant for Ryntal Property Management. The company was launched in 2008 during the global financial and housing crisis.
